Help me identify a snake
and no, I don't mean the president! Yesterday, I kept scaring (not intentionally, I was working in the yard) a snake back into a corner against my house and the cellar doors. It was at least 18 inches long and silver-gray. No stripes or other markings, just solid. Any ideas? I've search the Ohio Dept of Natural Resources site and cannot find one like it.

My biggest fear? It's gotten past the seal on the cellar doors and is in my basement...

Thanks!

1. Googling turned up somebody also in Ohio asking almost exactly the same
question; the answer that person got was a blue racer. http://www.enaturalist.org/question/3831 Sorry I don't have any insight into Ohio reptiles personally. (Wait! Could it have been Blackwell?)

2. How funny
sounds identical. The neighbor was clearing a small field that had grown about 2' high with grass, getting ready for the 4-H animals the kids will be raising. I think it was looking for a place to hide. I REALLY hope it didn't make it into my basement...

Thanks!

:hi:

10. You already hurt it.
You scared it and made it run from you. He, or she, or it is now lost. Right now, it wants it's mommy and needs some counseling and possibly some Prozac.

7. ...
I know. It sure moved fast when I came around the edge of the cellar doors. I don't mind that it's out there, I just don't want to encounter it in my house. I have two cats too...

11. if it's the blue racer, don't be concerned
Edited on Mon May-22-06 09:21 PM by pitohui
i had a very large one, about six feet long, of the black racer subspecies that lived in my yard for many, many years -- over a decade -- and it never harmed anyone

i think it must have finally passed on because i did not find its shed last summer and then i saw a smaller one on the territory

but they are perfectly harmless, not poisonous, not vicious

they are just looking to keep the rodents down

p.s. i wouldn't worry abt the cats, i would have PAID mine to control the cat population around here but it obviously didn't

I'd worry if the snake got in the house and got cornered.

12. One thing I'll never get used to out here in the country
the sound of dying in the night. Those horrible sounds aren't human but almost don't sound of this earth. It's happened twice so far and I have a terrible time calming down. :(
