The joys of being the big brother.
My baby sister is 17 years younger than me, so I'm semi-parental with her. She's in college now and she's getting her own place off-campus for the first time.

So guess who gets to co-sign her first lease?

I love her to pieces, but signing on the dotted line to be liable for her possible debts scares the bejezus out of me. She doesn't want to ask Dad because he wants her to stay at home. My twin brother is useless and neither of us talk to him. So I get to be the responsible adult.

When did I become the responsible adult?

1. My dear Thomcat.....
You became the responsible adult NOW......

And good for you!

You can do it.....and so can your sister!

Have you talked to her about her responsibilities? It might be a good idea...

And forgive me if you already thought of that, and many other things that I haven't thought of!

You both will be fine. You just need to keep the lines of communication open....

I've definitely been talking to her over the years about being responsible. I think she even listens occassionally. We are the only two people in the family to go to college. She's following in my footsteps, even going to the same school I went to. She wants, SO MUCH, to be an independent adult so long as other people are there to catch her if she screws things up.
:)

It's frustrating and ironic that as much as she takes after me, she's somehow ended up a republican. (Ick.) But hopefully she'll outgrow that as she develops that sense of responsiblity. I'm working on it.

3. Seems to me that you have your bases covered!
You can also see this as preparation for parenthood....

IF you're so inclined, that is!

5. She has a job.
And a steady work history so that's a good start. I'm pretty sure she'll be able to keep up with the rent without my help. I just worry.
