Help anyone know of any soft food to eat?
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 01:31 AM by Indy_Dem_Defender
Just had some dental surgery tuesday and I will be without teeth for 3 months. Can anyone think of some soft food that I can gum during this time. I know there are foods I probably forgot about and never realized I could eat so I came here to ask, any help given I appreciate in advance.

2. Smoothies, bananas, mashed potatoes,
basically anything that you can "gum" as opposed to having to actually chew with teeth.

Also, you might want to look at things like Ensure or Boost, in terms of vitamins, minerals, etc.

Hope your healing goes well, IDD!

4. cream of wheat
and similar corn meal based foods. Some of those are good both with sweet flavorings and with savory stuff like pork fat, bacon grease and the like, if you are into that.

Lots of terrific soups. Mashed potatoes--also good with a variety of flavoring variations.

Smoothies

Good luck.

5. Bananas, tofu, PB&J sandwiches,
Certain cold cereals left to get soggy (such as bran flakes, Life, Corn Flakes, etc.), applesauce, pancakes, scrambled eggs.

(that's all I can think of at the moment)

Best wishes. :hi:

7. Mac and cheese.
Spaghetti-os. Eggs, just about any way, but cheese omelet especially good, and protein-rich. Really, bologna and hot dogs can be eaten carefully, as can soft cheese.

10. When I underwent radiation therapy for lymphoma
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 03:28 AM by KitchenWitch
I needed to eat soft foods for months.

I lived on mashed potatoes and gravy, a lot of soup, scrambled eggs, poached eggs, custard, yogurt, applesauce, cottage cheese, ice cream, and those nutrition shakes.

Needless to say, I did lose weight, but I was able to stay fairly well nourished.

If you are a vegetarian, there are ways of preparing tofu that are soft.

On edit: if you do not already have one or both, now might be a good time to invest in a food processor and/or one of those hand blenders (that looks like an outboard boat motor). You can puree just about anything with either of the above. Make sure, with drier foods, such as meats, that you add some sort of liquid, to help soften them.

11. Looks like side dishes are covered
so here's some meat ideas, if you eat it.

Meat loaf, meatballs, sloppy joes and soft tacos. Fish if it's not fried or baked with a crust. Grilled is good.

12. This might lack sensitivity...
But, would you mind sharing the circumstances that led up to this. I'm just really weird about teeth. I have dreams about losing them and it freaks me out. I'm curious if your unfortunate situation could have been prevented. If it could have been I would be interested in the suggested methods of tooth retention.

I wish you the best of luck.. And.Eat.Ice_Cream

15. don't worry about sensitivity
I've been walking around since january with a broken off missing left front tooth, people of all walks of life assume your trash or redneck if you have missing teeth, if that doesn't toughen you up nothing will. Long story short, I hadn't been to the dentist since I was about 12, I'm 25 now so it's been about half my life. I came from a divorced family and my old man was suppose to pay for health care but just like child support he didn't follow through 90% of the time. The pathetic thing about that situation is he worked in the insurance industry so the health insurance would of cost him zero, so from age 12-19 I only visited any kind of doctor twice. Since then I've had jobs where health insurance wasn't offered or I would come home with only a paycheck stub and be insurance poor.

I finally went to the dentist in january after my front tooth broke off, something I've been avoiding for years due to the fear of cost and what work might need done. Found out that I need dentures to replace my top teeth and a partial for my molars on the bottom. This was all due to multiple things, first never going to the dentist, which cause undetected cavities to grow crumbling teeth. I use to be a big Cola drinker and no matter how much you brush your teeth like I did, you're still going to get cavities drinking that shit in a can or bottle. Also I never had my wisdom teeth removed during which not only shifted teeth together causing pressure weaking teeth, but gave me some real sinus problems over the past couple of years.

After getting back my tax check and saving money since january, I was able to afford to get my teeth pulled and get dentures something a lot of people can't do. Total cost for my work was 7 grand, 4 grand to get the teeth pulled and 3 grand to get the dentures and partials made. My advice to anyone who reads this is go to the dentist as recommended you'll be saving yourself alot of money and pain in the long run. Cut out drinking carbonated drinks such as coke and pepsi, it's like battery acid in a can and I am now a big proponent of educating kids about the effects of drinking carbonated drinks. The amount I see kids drink today there are going to be alot of toothless adults running around in the next 10-15 years. I am also a strong supporter of a national healthcare plan always was even before this, If such a plan was around during my childhood or even during my early 20's of being apart of the working poor, myself like alot of people would of been able to prevent situations like this from happening in the first place.

22. your tooth just broke off?

Your tooth just broke off out of the blue? Yikes! How can that even happen?

:scared:

That's an awful lot of work you're having all at once -- and at an awfully young age, your lack of early dental care notwithstanding. Did you seek a second opinion?

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Here's something to think of: science is figuring out how to regrow teeth using stem cells. In the future when we have national healthcare, you will get your own teeth back.

18. A lot of Mexican food is very soft
Refried bean and cheese burritos, spanish rice, soups.

Most Indian food is also soft and scooped with bits of pita bread. The flavors are mind-blowing.

Lasagna can be cut very fine, as can virtually all pasta.

When I've had dental work, I love treating myself to smoothies and milk shakes. They can be made extremely nutritious and delicious. I turned vegetarian when I had a couple of teeth yanked and my mouth was sore for more than 2 weeks. Meat requires more chewing so it was naturally eliminated.

Omelets, pancakes, french toast, soggy cereal (Honey Nut Cheerios soaked in milk!)

If you go out to eat, especially at ethnic restaurants, ask for recommendations. Those folks LOVE to help in that kind of situation!

Good luck. You'll probably lose some weight which for me was an added bonus!

19. Naked Juice Green Machine
I love this stuff! It looks like a bottle of swamp water; but it tastes great. And it's full of anti-oxidants to help ward off infection.

You can find nutritional info (and check out their other juices) here:
