What is your favorite 'based on a true story' tv movie or film?
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 09:12 AM by Cannikin
Without a doubt, mine is 'Monster' with Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci.
Charlize won the oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Its closely based on the life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

1. Apollo 13
I still hold my breath on re-entry even though I've seen it (and lived through the actual 3 minutes) over and over

Ron Howard did an awesome job with that story.

29. My vote too.
One of the few movies that stayed accurate.

Usually "based on a true story" means it started that way until the director & producers egos decided they could "make it better" (they never do).

3. Three-way tie
"Tora! Tora! Tora!"

"Schindler's List"

"In Cold Blood" (the original)

Come to think of it, "American Graffiti" could be considered "based on a true story," as Lucas took it from his days cruisin' McHenry Boulevard in Modesto. And it's my second-favorite movie EVarrr.

so it seemed like all week. I'll PM you next time I see that it's on and with any luck you'll see that in time.

I don't know of this Small Sacrifices you speak of. Do tell.

23. "Small Sacrifices" was Farrah Fawcett playing Dianne Downs
-in what I believe was also a two-parter- who shot her children in 1986, I think. Dianne Downs was responsible for 1 death and the other twos' injuries. The movie was plenty campy, but I really think it got some major points across. Farrah was way too melodramatic, and also she had this Southern accent I didn't hear on the interviews with Oprah.

:D :toast: Um...we have GOT to hang out some time.

26. Ooh that sounds like a good one.
And yes, yes we do. :toast:

My work schedule is such that I'm not able to be at the computer very often so I barely see people here at the old DU, and everybody I know in town (non-DU buddies) has a different schedule than me so I rarely get to hang with them on my nights off or on theirs. Nuts to that.

I'd love to see actual footage of that performance. Holy crap! I think I'd have to belt a few back myself just to stand seeing it.

37. I saw that twice on its initial run.
As a 12 year old. Then I went on to read "7 Pillars of Wisdom."

CG & other special effects are all very well. But that was real spectacle. Although my favorite scene might be El Aurens ordering lemonade in Cairo.

24. Cinderella Man.
The story of John Braddock. The Depression era is fascinating, and you get Russell Crowe playing a gritty, complex character. It doesn't get much better than that.

It's an attempt to show Pearl Harbor from both sides. With no "romance" thrown in.

From Tom Wolfe's book. Full of snark & humor, but with a touch of true heroism.

(I have a faint memory of Air Force dependant housing.)
