2 year old shoots 4 year old ...
Port Royal Kentucky.

A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition in Kosair Children’s Hospital after she was shot in the mouth Wednesday night by a 2-year-old, WLKY NewsChannel 32 reported.

Kentucky State Police said Sarah Marie Courtney of Port Royal, which is about 50 miles north of Louisville, was shot with a .38-caliber revolver.

Courtney was flown to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville just after 7 p.m. Wednesday with what troopers described as possible life-threatening injuries. On Thursday evening, she was listed in critical condition.

*snip*

The gun was stored in a drawer in the parents' bedroom, police said.

"It's obvious these kids were probably playing around (and) found these guns," said Trooper Greg Larimore of the Kentucky State Police. "We have a very, very unfortunate accident."

11. It's the parents' fault, those idiots.
In these situations, the parents have to be blamed. How the fuck did a 2 year old get ahold of a gun?! Stupid parents. I hope they are upset.

3. There should be an IQ test for owning guns.
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 10:24 PM by haruka3_2000
I'm not into strict gun control. However, I believe if someone has children in the house, they need to take every precaution available to keep those guns away from their children. These people were clearly not responsible enough to own guns.

7. Yeah, pretty much.
I'm thinking about buying a handgun because I enjoy them. Even without kids around, it's going to be locked up, if I buy it. Honestly, if I had kids, I think I'd be concerned about having a handgun, even with proper precautions.

6. Never has anyone adequately explained to me...
how is is possible to keep a gun safely hidden from children AND easily accessible in the case of an emergency. If it's within easy reach, the kids could get it. If it's hidden away, unloaded, ammo in a separate location, it would be practically worthless if there were an intruder trying to break in...or already in.

I agree that guns and children do not mix.

10. Honestly, for home protection, I'd have a guard dog before a gun.
We have guns, but none of them are for protection. We usually don't even have ammo in the house. They're just for target use or decoration (M-1 Garand with bayonet).

The only weapon I've ever carried for self-defense was a knife (which I'm trained in). I wouldn't want to ever carry a gun for self-defense.

12. I would think a good watch dog would scare most...
potential intruders away, making a handgun unnecessary.

13. Up until recently, we always had dogs like that.
A 95lb. German Shepherd with a hatred of strangers was a good one. Of course, if they rang the doorbell, she'd bark three times and walk into the basement. I actually once physically got into a fight with the GSD. She never went after me again.

Before that, a Shepherd-Pitbull mix. She was the sweetest, best-trained dog ever, but she looked scary. She also was very protective, but loved all people and animals, unless they exhibited aggressive behavior.

Both dogs could be called off or told "check it out" which would cause their hackles to raise and snarling at whatever we pointed at. Let's face it, no one is going to go into a house with that dog there.

30. finger-access safe
It's a steel box with four buttons arranged like human fingers. Once known, the combination can be accessed by touch.

Here's a suggestion, keep the bedroom door locked and don't allow the children in there anyway.

17. Well, it's harder if you keep the keys with you, but like I said in a post
above, if I had kids, I would have way more reservations about keeping a gun in the house.

The first NAZI thugs, the SA, were just that, thugs. Once Hitler came to power, the SA was disbanded and replced with the professional SS.

20. Not to be insensitive
Because a two-year old getting being able to get its hands on a gun makes my blood boil almost to heart-attack level. But...how can this place be 50 miles north of Louisville and be in Kentucky? Louisville is on the Ohio River and it and Indiana are the only things north of the city.

25. Guns don't kill people, people kill people
Doesn't work so good in a situation like this, huh? Those poor, poor children -- how horrible.

WTF was a .38 just left around? No lock, loaded, etc.? I was brought up in a home with sporting rifles and shotguns, ALL always locked in a gun safe, ammunition locked in a separate safe. Crazy. If you live some place where you feel so unsafe you have to keep a loaded, unlocked .38 next to your bed, then move... except for some of these people, there's no place where they feel safe, because paranoia is more fun.

Flame away. I don't care.

May your god watch over you, little Sarah Marie... *sigh*

31. I was raised in a house full of firearms...
None were ever locked up, I'm not sure how but my parents never had to yell at me about playing with guns. I remember being a young child and my father always would sit me in his lap and show whatever new pistol or long gun he'd just "traded-up". His only pistol he'd keep in the house was above the kitchen stove and when I was old enough to access it, I was also old enough to know better. Shotguns and rifles were everywhere though.

My brothers kids, now 20 and 17 were raised with firearms stored just about everywhere in the house, including under their beds (as kids)....crazy or what? but neither one of them ever shot themselves or any of their friends.

My house I have 28 gun safe and every weapon I have is stored in it. Including my home defense handgun. My children are 2 and 4 and have never touched a real gun (or play gun for that matter, well squirt guns not included)

Your first line of defense should always be a good dog in my book. I may invest in one of the small pistol safes sometime in the future depending on where we move to.

35. Experts say the dog thing really works
Criminals want the easy path: a dog barking, a security system decal (even if it amy be fake), floodlights, high shrubs, all make it harder on them.
