The death of a killer whale that starred in the 1993 Hollywood film Free Willy renews a dispute between environmentalists, but also highlights a saga of exploitation of one of the world's most remarkable creatures.

The 250-tonne blue-and-white whale was called Keiko. He was born in the Atlantic and captured at the age of two.

Keiko lived in aquariums in Iceland, Ontario, Mexico City, Oregon and Norway. He died aged 27, although wild orcas commonly survive to 35.
