Redheads.
It's summer, which for this redhead means dull, fading shades. I've always found my red fades quickly, but in the summer it can just be ridiculous.

Right now, I mix Manic Panic or Punky Colours pillarbox red dye with organic conditioner, and leave it in 'til it dries, then wash it out. It's a nice boost, but a bit time consuming.

Any tips? What do you guys do?

6. I get mine colored a little more often in the summer.
But I'm not a brilliant shade of red, just a soft auburn with a few blonde highlights.
The more you add the red color the less the fading will be over time.

I love being a redhead!! :)

12. I've been a redhead since I was about 13
I did switch out a couple of times, but for the most part, it's been red. Be it bright fire red, or dark chocolate cherry. It just doesn't want to stop fading. Also, it doesn't want to bleach out, or be dyed over. Stupid red :)

If so that could've caused the color not to take to your hair.

22. I'm a natural
and even mine fades a bit in the summer. It tends to lighten and then sometimes turn a bit brassy, instead of staying it's true color. (That's why there are so few summer pics of me. Everyone else looks all cute, tanned and blonde while I look like a cooked lobster who borrowed CarrotTop's hairdresser.)

Ok-if I swim I immediately rinse my hair w/ cold water and a quarter cup of vinegar. The vinegar strips out all of the chlorine but keeps the color nice. It's also good for product buildup but won't strip your hair dye.

I use a lightweight conditioner. You can use nearly any kind and it doesn't even have to be for anything that protects color. Keeping your hair well-moisterized but not heavy will keep your color a bit longer. Right now I'm just using Dove and it's working for me. Just don't overcondition.

Use a sealer. It will keep the color in longer.

Finally and most important: when the sun is really beating down, invest in a big floppy hat. The best way to keep reds in check is by covering them when it's too bright outside. The added bonus is that it keeps my nose from burning and then peeling.

24. I went dark red for a while and I loved it... except that my hair grows
so fast that I had dark roots by the second day after the dye job. :eyes: I wear my hair long, so it always took at least two bottles of dye and the beautician charged me double.

There are shampoo and conditioning products that have cherry bark, henna, and other such things in them to help keep the red from fading. I just can't remember the name of them. (They smell heavenly, too.)

31. Artec Color depositing Shampoo- leave it on longer than they say....
they have a couple of shades of red- and the more processed your hair has been, the more color it picks up.
I find the shampoo works better than the conditioner for me.
i heart red heads.

35. ahhh, you have a nice rich plum. i think they'll have a shade for you.
i use mahogany on my brown hair, and it gives it red tones w/out being brassy.
i wash w/ normal shampoos first, because it does not clean your hair well, it's like ink! then i use just a bit on my more surfacey damaged layers and leave it a minute or two. It definitely smoothes my hair and makes the color richer.
