Some good news about reyd reid reed's daughter
She called. She wants to come home. She's in Castle Rock, about 30 miles north of Colorado Springs.

Lisa didn't actually talk to her. Get this: When Sarah called, Lisa was on the phone with the mother of a kid who might know where Sarah is; the mom had called to bitch Lisa out for putting her son's name on the flyers. So Sarah left voice mail. Caller ID didn't catch the number because it was blocked.

But... Sarah had also called a friend, and the friend and her mom came by Lisa's house and told her where she was. Lisa called the police there, and dispatch is giving the information to the police on patrol.

It's not over yet, but this is the best news we've had in five days.

1. OMG, I'm so glad to hear that.
What an awful coincidence that she was on the phone at the time, but at least Sarah called, and wants to come home. to you, Lisa.

19. Well, hold on
The Castle Rock cops are looking for her — and not actively, either. They've gotten her description and they'll keep their eyes out for her while on patrol. But they're not gonna launch a personhunt or anything.

Like I said, it's not over yet. We just know where she is and that she's reasonably okay, and wants to come home.

22. Knowing that she's alive and wants to come home is half the battle
it's the not knowing anything good or bad which must be the absolute worst for a mother. Never the less I wish them both well and for RRR's daughter to have a safe passage home

26. wow - RRR
has been through SUCH frustration with her local law enforcement officials and now... she's so close... and the Castle Rock officers are just keeping an "eye out".... Can we do anything? Can we call, e-mail, etc? Maybe calling the local dispatch would be counterproductive as it would tie up their lines... but can we call an elected official to put pressure on them?

38. What would you have them do?
There are 47 sworn officers in the Castle Rock Police Department. That means there are eight to 12 on patrol during a given shift. They cover an area of 31.6 square miles. They know she called from a gas station; that's all.

What sort of "pressure" would you apply? To have them do what?

The Castle Rock PD has already done more, from one phone call, than the Colorado Springs PD has done in five days.

48. from your previous post
when you mentioned that they were not "actively looking for her" I took it to mean that they could "actively look for her".

If I misunderstood, and they are doing everything they can, I'm sorry if I offered a "knee jerk" assumption.

My step-dad is a police officer - and I never meant any disrespect toward law enforcement officials, but I do realize some things can become "by the book" or "SOP" issues.... I just thought if a Mayor or Rep was pushing the issue (being pushed by phone calls), it could push a Co. Sheriff or Local PD Chief a bit more. I'm sorry if my post seemed to mean anything less than, "if there is ANYTHING we can do without actually being there, please let us know."

My heart and thoughts have gone out to RRR since I first read the situation this past weekend and they will continue. I just wish I could do more.

62. CSPD site states --not illegal in CO to be a runaway
http://www.springsgov.com/Page.asp?NavID=1673

My son/daughter has runaway. What can I do?
You need to go to the closest Police Area Command as it relates to where the child was last seen. The PSR at the front desk will help take the report and contact the appropriate personnel. It is not against the law to runaway. So you child will not acquire a criminal record.

Am SO glad there is some hope re: Castle Rock, and calling Lisa! It's time for Sarah to get herself home, and safely!

Will keep checking in for updates!

Thanks for posting this news, OR! :hi:

43. Wouldn't help
No local media outlet is gonna push something like this very hard. They need to maintain a working relationship with the cops since they rely on them for so many stories. They'd ask a few perfunctory questions, get a few perfunctory answers.

"The police department is under-staffed and under-funded. We do the best we can. This wasn't a criminal case; the youth was classified as a runaway. Thousands of kids run away from home every day. No police department has the resources to track down every one."

They might interview Lisa and edit it just enough to make her look like a semi-hysterical, demanding mother.

And that'd be about it.

Now, the cab company — that's another story.

52. I wonder if she gave any indication whether she was held against her will,
which I would think would make it immediately a "red alert" kidnapping situation, among other possible crimes.

It seems odd that she would call from a gas station instead of from where ever she was staying, unless the whole purpose was to keep her location a secret, or if she only got a quick moment to get away from someone to call while outside their sight.

59. Ya the business of calling from a gas station is not so reassuring. If she
wants to come home, why not just call again and arrange to be picked up. The obvious reason, in a runaway situation, is shame.

But it also speaks to the possibility of being held.

82. She would have called 911 in that case.
She may not be alone, or she would have just stayed by the phone, so she may not feel like whoever she's with would approve of her calling, but if she were truly being held, she would have called the cops, not her mom and then her friend.

I hope. She hasn't made great decisions so far. But I suspect she's got a tough, smart streak--look at her mom.

110. mmmmm..
I dunno. She may not want or feel she can call 911 because it could have put her in danger if the person she's with figured out she called....in reality we know that isn't true, but in the mind of a teen, you never know. NOT a slam on her intelligence, I'm talking the fact that her emotions could have been played on. Anything is a possibility. I certainly hope I am completely off base.
Still sending light and love---

68. Hmmm seems like a good time for RRR to get call waiting if she doesn't
already have it, so she can know whenever there is an incoming call and answer it. Certainly after something like this (missed call from daughter) I think she'd want to answer any call if she was at home.

Caller ID also although I think one of the other posts indicated that she has this?

83. Yup...I have....
The nearest I can figure is that Sarah must've called at the same time.....that woman....called. So Sarah got bumped to voice mail.

I've answered every single call...I think I missed one today when I had trouble clicking over and was in the car...I got that message at the same time I got Sarah's.

You've all been absolutely incredible. Keep everything you can cross, crossed.

because, in the flyer, I put: "Believed to be in the company of Solomon Farmer."

Tough shit. That's who she went to meet. That's the information I had, that's the information I used. He HAD seen her. He WAS with her, I found out.

Heh...she'd be even less pleased if she knew I'd posted his name in a public forum, wouldn't she?

Because he's such a 'good kid'.

Before I put his name on anything, I knew for a fact that he had seen her and knew something about where she is/was/could be. And I made sure his mother knew this. At which point she shut up. Sorta.

Although she still professes that he's a 'good kid'.

You should see the MySpace page that this 'good kid' has put together. It scared the living shit outta me. And I don't scare easily.

My daughter's page is private, and I'm okay with that, because I've seen it and it's pretty harmless. However a bunch of her friends have their pages out in the open, so I see her comments to them as well as lots of other interesting stuff.

Fortunately my daughter talks to me a lot so I know what's going on with these kids for the most part, but it is interesting.

I can't believe some of them don't realize their parents could be reading it, when they write stuff like "I was so wasted last night!" LOL.

Not sure whether to hug her or kill her when she gets back. Still, it's a far happier kind of freakout. :) My sister pulled one of these that had us crazy a few years back. She was taking a bus trip and wasn't at the station when my mom arrived to pick her up. Turns out there was a screwup that gave her a layover but she never called and her phone was off. We found out what was going on the next day. Ugh! No excuse to ever have your cell not working.

Certainly a choice on how she'll spend part of her time while grounded

138. YAY! I'm so happy for you RRR!
I've been watching and wondering. I'm glad it's nearing a happy ending.

Please, after you hug her then ground her, maybe have her read the threads here at DU so she has some idea of what her actions created. Maybe her brothers will talk with her, too (after you finish, of course); about what it felt like to them, what it was like to wonder and worry this way. Not to make her feel guilty, but to maybe let her know that her actions don't happen in a vacuum; they effect others. And not just immediate family; look at all the "total strangers" here at DU who have been effected.

/stepping off soapbox

Sorry, didn't mean to sound pompous. Just an idea I had for a learning experience for Sarah.

I'm so happy for you and your boys to have this almost resolved. I'm happy Sarah is ready to come home.

I wish you much peace, happiness and healing in the coming days, weeks and months.

162. i would be cautious about that -- could v. easily backfire!
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 01:51 PM by pitohui
for some teens this might work

for others it would provide the kind of drama reward that would guarantee more problems and attention-getting behavior in future -- notoriety is just another kind of fame

i think before rrr takes any such action, she should at least confer w. a professional psychologist or something of that sort who has actually MET the young lady

139. Oh that is wondeful.
I imagine RRR is still very stressed out. After all, how do you react to a daughter who just did this? After giving her the world's biggest hug I mean. It's going to be a stressful household for a while.

But at least her daughter is on her way home. I sure everyone here feels very relieved. I can't be the only one who was getting kind of personally invested in this.

You're all wonderful people.

141. Excellent bulletin, O.R. End of the beginning, though.
Long walk from "I want to come home" and arriving home. With the requisite Family therapy to follow, I hope.

142. Get some family counseling ASAP
That's not a put-down: I thank God every day that when my teenager mouthed off at me one day I had the sense to ask her how she was feeling. My beautiful athletic high achiever was struggling with severe depression. If we hadn't gotten her treatment when we did, we might have lost her.

Can anyone out there offer some more specific advice? Grounding forever sounds cute to say but would be a terrible tactic IMO.

144. I completely agree
She ran away for a reason, whether it was a reason that makes any sense to an adult or just a reason that makes sense only to a teenager.

143. Wonderful news!
From someone who can empathize...when you finally hear your child's voice on the line, it's like a 3 ton weight being lifted off your chest! May God give you all strength for the work you have ahead of you to heal and come through this crisis...I am SO happy you will have that chance!:)

145. when I read this I couldn't
help but smile.. I mean I understood the anger and the frustration cuz I have been through it, but on the other hand I also know how it feels to hear words like this.

I'm glad that Sarah's mom is smart enough to know this is not something ugly against her, but that Sarah needed to say something she needed to say but didn't know how.

Just remember Sarah is very young. She is doing her best. And Sarah's mom loves her and we will be here to love you.

Don't feel alone. Just hold her and we will hold you. How wonderful to have a daughter so many people care about.

146. I'm printing this off
so all the moms I know can use it to give to their kids and let them know how important they are. Too many suicides and runaways in my life I guess. So many days I have a struggle to keep it good, and these young adults are incredible in how they don't give up. Sarah's mom is so strong and I bet she had no idea how strong she was a week ago.
