She raised three kids on her own, back in the 60s -- she was lucky to get $50 a month from dear ol' Dad. Things got bad often. She faced crummy apartments, public housing, job discrimination (she couldn't have many jobs because there were "men with families" out there who needed them more), she faced housing discrimination (when she was finally able to afford it, she tried to buy a small house - they wouldn't give her a loan without her father signing for it because she was single), workplace discrimination (she worked in the banking industry and made her way from secretary to VP of the Trust Division, fighting every step of the way for what she deserved), and discrimination from her chosen religion (she was a persona non grata at our church because she was a divorcee).

We lived on our Mom's very modest salary (oh yeah, she got paid less than her male counterparts, too) -- but in spite of that, she made sure we were clothed well (she made 99% of our clothes), fed well (after working 8-5 downtown she would catch the bus home to cook for us), had wonderful vacations (mostly camping and day trips, but our big treat was Disneyland in '66), a good education (12 years of Catholic school for 3), and generally made sure we didn't do without the small things that made life special (books, movies, music) all the while trying to manage her own life.

I cannot believe she did what she did -- I don't know that I could have done the same thing.
