Poll question: How many vegetarians do we have on DU? Speak up :)
Are you a vegetarian or no? What I mean by vegetarian is that you do not eat any seafood or meat, but you do eat dairy and eggs. Are you a vegan even? Do you not eat any seafood, meat, dairy, or eggs? I myself am a vegatarian currently.

3. Pretty Close
I've gone weeks without red meat and love soy, fresh veggies and grains other than wheat.

I've been a vegetarian since the age of fourteen, and I'm quite happy with my tofu and veggies, thanks.

Mmmmm... curds.

5. Vegan for almost a decade here
I make occasional exceptions for milk chocolate because I love Hershey bars, but I am essentially a vegan.

10. Why not?
Since the philosophical underpinning of veganism is minimizing suffering, and the spooch comes from a consenting being who is not suffering, there's no reason not to. Unless you think sperm are sentient?

13. no....
but the vegans I've known don't eat honey because it's an animal product, but I'd be hard pressed to say that the bees are "suffering". They're just doin' what bees do.

8. Tried to go veggie
Almost died. I got very sick. So now I still eat meat but I make sure I remain aware of what my actions imply.

11. Omnivore here
I eat everything. As much as my budget allows I eat organic meats and dairy: free-range chicken, grass-fed beef, etc. Usually a couple of times a week I wind up having vegetarian meals.

I must have protein. I cannot subsist on carbs alone.

12. I do vegetarian for a day or a few days, then backslide.
Today was one of those days: Cereal for breakfast, tomato and pimento cheese sammich for lunch, and spaghetti with a mushroom-sauteed-in-lemon-olive-oil sauce for dinner.

15. gained about 20 lbs when I became a veg.
I became one in 89, and was a full veg (not a vegan, though) until 94. Then I started eating fish. Turns out, deep-fried cheese really isn't that good for you. Who'da thunk? Then, I got drunk and ate chicken wings... and DAMN were they good!

So now, I don't eat mammals, but I'll eat pretty much anything else. And I've lost all the weight I gained way back when. I'm not saying at all that vegetarians can't have diets which promote healthy weights--it's just that, at the time (college), I wasn't able to spend the time/resources to cook healthy vegetarian foods.

I eat vegetarian for breakfast every day, lunch most days, and dinner about 1/2 of the time.

17. Guilty
I've been vegetarian for two years now, and vegan for about 9 months. In fact, I just looked up my vegetarian thread on the old DU archives. I went to DUers for help in the transition cuz I didn't know what I was doing. :)

21. L/O veg here...
though I rarely eat eggs, just in baked goods.

I've tried to go vegan a few times, but I just don't think it's me. So I am resigned to doing what I can and let that be enough.

22. Vegan for a long time.
I tried raw foodism for about six months and found it just about impossible. Now that I have kids we eat fish and chicken occasionally. It is really hard to get little kids to eat a vegetarian diet with enough protein.
