In Praise of Women Named Margaret
How about Margaret Sanger? If our youngest DUers (particularly women) haven't heard of her, well, it's time to get an education:

Margaret Sanger was an early pioneer of birth control. She founded the organization that would become Planned Parenthood.

"In 1912 . . . she went to work in the poverty-stricken East Side slums of Manhattan. That same year, she also started writing a column for the New York Call entitled "What Every Girl Should Know." Distributing a pamphlet, Family Limitation, to poor women, Sanger repeatedly risked scandal and imprisonment by acting in defiance of the Comstock Law of 1873 which outlawed as obscene the dissemination of contraceptive information and devices."

Some of her ideas (re eugenics) weren't quite right, IMO. But still, she electrified the world. Perhaps there is a way for everyone who has benefited from what she started to pay it forward.

Do you know a woman named Margaret, living or not, whom you'd like to praise? This is the place!

2. I know of a Marguerite.
close, but not quite.

Marguerite Yourcenar, wrote the stories in the book "Two Lives and a Dream". One, called "Nathaniel" really made an impact on me. He was one of the two lives.

8. Margaret Sanger was a firm believer in Eugenics
THAT'S why she was so pro-BC. *sigh* I was totally disillusioned when I found that out...

which is why I still admire her.

19. I know this is hard to believe, but......
A former place of employment had a sweet girl that worked there named Margaret, and everyone called her by the diminutive 'Peg'.

There was also a nice young man working there while going to school with the last name of 'Legger'.

Yeah, they got married.

22. My Grandma Margaret, who was a wonderful woman
who survived the Great Depression with six children after her husband (my grandfather) abandoned them. She was a tough cookie, but she did the absolute best she could for my father and his siblings. My sister's middle name was Margaret before she got married, and it was a tribute to her. Grandma Margaret died in 1972.

My husband's niece is named Margaret but goes by Maggie. She's a sweet, kind, lovely young lady (unlike her older sister, who is spoiled rotten and shows it). Maggie's 19 and a sophomore in college, and she's going to go very far! :)

24. My mom and my grandmom, both named Margaret.
My grandmother passed away in 1998. I still miss her. She taught me to crochet, a hobby I still enjoy to this day. I was given her crochet instruction books. Sometimes I find a tear coming to my eye as I look through them for ideas because I'll see a doily that she made and know that she was thinking of me as she crochet it.

My mom and I didn't always get along the best as I was growing up. My goals in life were different than hers. But now that we're both older we've found our way of getting along and even take vacations together.
Love ya, Mom!

27. My grandmother, my college roommate and my niece
My grandma was called Peg, taught nursery school, and was a real lady who was kind to everyone. My former roomie goes by Margaret; she's an outspoken liberal (yay!) who loves to sing and act and is as devoted a friend as they come. My niece, Maggie, is a down-to-earth sweetheart who loves to help people and play sports. Let's hear it for the Margarets in our lives!

28. There's A Light Beyond These Woods (Mary Margaret) - Nanci Griffith
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 09:10 PM by DemoTex
There's a light beyond these woods Mary Margaret
Do you think that we will go there
And see what makes it shine, Mary Margaret
It's almost morning and we've talked all night
I know we've made big plans for 10 year olds
You and I

Have you met my new boyfriend Margaret
His name is John and he rides my bus to school
And he holds my hand - he's 14 he's my older man
We'll still be the best of friends the three of us
Margaret, John and I

Let's go to New York City Margaret
We'll hide out in the subways and drink the poets wine,
Oh, but I had John so you went and I stayed behind
But you were home in time for the senior prom
When we lost John

The fantasies we planned well I live without them now,
All the dreams we sang that we knew about
Well they haven't changed
There'll never be two friends like you and me
Mary Margaret

It's nice to see your family growing Margaret
Your daughter and your husband they really treat you right
But we've talked all night
Oh, what about those nights
That rode beyond our woods when we were ten
You were the rambler then

The fantasies we planned oh Maggie I live without them now
All the dreams we sang, we damn sure knew how
But I'll never change
There'll never be two friends just like you and me
Maggie can't you see ?
There's a light beyond your woods Mary Margaret

A song so good it makes you hurt.

BTW (ON EDIT): Nanci Griffith played at Governor Ann Richards' funeral service last month. The first CD played in my new Tacoma pick-up truck last month was "The Best of Nanci Griffith."
