HAWTHORNE, Fla. -- Squirrel hunters may be to blame for the recent school lockdowns in the Hawthorne and Gilchrist area.
According to the Alachua County sheriff's office, several schools were placed on lockdown Wednesday after a parent noticed a man walking in the area with what appeared to be a shotgun. The man was located and may face a weapon violation charge.
On Tuesday, another school was on lockdown in Gilchrist County. Two 17-year-olds shot a squirrel just 40 feet away and police locked down the school as a precaution while they searched for the teenagers.
No one was injured in either incident.
Sergeant Keith Faulk said the man in Wednesday's incident may have been squirrel hunting, as he put it "a stupid thing to do considering what has happened lately."
Faulk was referring to the recent rash of school shootings around the country.
