Used-book-store regulars: whatcha found worth talkin' 'bout this week?
I had a minor "major score" 2 days ago;
3 of terry pratchett's works, near-mint
and only read once.(by a little old fantasty-novel
fan who only read them on Sundays, etc....)

He's popular, and hard to find USED...
but I got 2 of the DiskWorld series that
were not yet on my shelf, and one of his
'Nome' trilogy that's been on my list for
several years now.

So, how YOU doin'? what's your best half-price SCORE lately?

1. First (American) Edition Shaw for $4
George Bernard Shaw, that is; a 1901 American first of Candida in very, very good condition. It's worth considerably more - not that I'd part with it!

2. Ooooh, KA-Frickin'-CHING! That's like striking gold- congrats!
I'm not a Shaw fan by a long shot, but even I know enough
to snatch up a US 1st edition for 4 bucks!

Kudos on that find! :toast:

3. Neveryon
Sam Delaney..... story of a man who fights slavery with a passion but also secretely desires it.
Got it for a buck.... and it made me reexamine my own sexuality.

Sam is always brilliant... Stars In My Pocket Like Grains of Sand or Time Considered As A Semiprecious Stone are perfection....

But a buck for Neveryon? A happy boy am I!

Khash.

4. You know that's a series, right?
I sold all of my SRD books when I moved. I wish I'd've known you liked him. The only one I didn't read (I think) was "Time Considered As A Semiprecious Stone" - or maybe I did and forgot.

Have you read his autobiography - something like - The Motion of Light in Water. It explains some of the recurrent themes in his books.

I think Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand was one of the best treatments of alien/human society interaction I've ever read.

5. Hitchcock Poster Art
Book of old movie posters. My brother is a big Hitchcock fan and his birthday is in 2 weeks. We usually don't exchange gifts but I couldn't pass it up.

12. Is that "coffee table" sized?
I have a weakness for those huge "coffee table books".
I usually manage to fight it, but not always- I found
one devoted to Fabergé cigarette cases the other year.

One nice thing is that some stores discount the large books,
because they don't sell as quickly. So, when I find one
I JUST HAFTA have, it's usually a really good deal.

7. Autographs are a nice bonus, IMHO.
The copy of Christopher Moores 'Coyote Blue'
I found the other month was autographed. I was
pretty happy about that, and he wasn't even a President!

8. I've found a lot of autographed books in used books stores...makes me wonder
if they were donated/sold by mistake (i.e., the original owner didn't realize they were parting with an autographed book) or maybe they were part of an estate sale...in any event, I've probably found 20 or so autographed books in used book stores over the years.

10. Myra Breckinridge
By Gore Vidal. I found it at a used book store yesterday in trade paperback for $4.00. I've wanted to read this book for a long time and for some reason the big book store chains here have very little or nothing by Vidal. I plan to start reading it tonight.

11. A wonderful old bookstore in the french quarter
No rhyme or reason to how the books are stacked. Its a joy just to wander in there, smell the musty old books and peruse the titles.

16. I was looking for book(s) on Pope John Paul the FIRST
and failed in my search but I was in there for more then an hour just perusing. There are several old bookstores in the quarter. The "fanciest" is probably the one in the house where William Faulkner lived and did some of his writing on Pirates Alley near St Louis Cathedral. They have the audacity to sell new books. The quarter is a wonderful hunk of real estate.

14. You could say I am a used bookstore regular
http://www.alibris.com/bookstore/xenithbooksellers

I wake up every morning surrounded by 30,000 books. Finding lots of 1sr editions.

I just began putting paperbacks up, and I've found 1000's of good condition fantsy and sci-fi stuff.

I should have another few 1000 up in the next week or two.

Problem is I am a book nut, and keep taking ones I want to read and putting them off to the side until my pile is so huge, I realize I will never read them all.

:hi:

15. he best "used book " place I have found
is my sisters house .
Lately she has given me a box set of Samuel Peyps Diary , two volumes of Civilization by Will and Ariel Durant (the very two I was missing) and a bunch of other books . She has an extensive library , and is VERY generous (for a Republican) LOL

I just happened to be there when she was paring things down(and she loves me best)  :loveya:
