The gay men who were on the float with the large phallus balloon floating above for all to see should not utter one syllable of anger if they are seen as being reduced to one thing. I didn't think for one moment that my fear of people was justification for me to be treated like that from a person in my own "community".

These days I strictly observe. I could choose to try to find somebody, but then I'd be labeled a "bug chaser". I'd rather observe and keep some hopes and dreams alive. It's all I've got left; having wasted nearly a decade on what was an obvious falsehood...

When people in the early pride marches made huge spectacles of themselves it was to force the conversation. It was to be so damned blatant that straight people had to admit we were here and start talking about us. It was a valid strategy then and it's a valid strategy now.

But what we say about ourselves, even symbolically, is very different from what other people can politely say about us. I can call myself a big slut with affection and a hell of a lot of sarcasm, but lord help anyone else who calls me a big slut. (except for Haruka and LostinVA, because I can feel their comments coming already! But they're dear friends, so again, they're allowed to say things that others can't.)

Often, it's important to know not just what was said, but who said it. And the meaning changes entirely based on who said it.

OTOH, we live in a time when FOX network tv programs get away with much worse. And the media gets more respect than political figures, which for many reasons is really saddening.
