Yankees get Aaron Boone from Reds; Bosox get Suppan back from Bucs
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/story?id=1587958

With the trade deadline approaching, the Yankees got third baseman Aaron Boone from the Reds, who fired his dad a few days ago. The Red Sox got Jeff Suppan and Brandon Lyon back from the Pirates. Both had played with Boston before: Suppan some years ago, Lyon up until a week or so ago.

Sure, I'm a Yankee basher. But it looks to me like the Red Sox got the pitching they really need, while Steinbrenner just got a spare player that will be nice to have.

Flame away -

1. Ventura goes to the Dodgers!
I guess Adrian Beltre had better not make real estate purchases in LA, huh?

Aaron Boone for Ventura is a nice swap for the Yanks. I like Boston's moves too. This race should be interesting!

I guess the Cards didn't trade JD Drew.

4. Lately he's been really good.
His last start was a CG shutout of the Cardinals - no small feat.

6. Righty, groundball pitcher, good strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Suppan is one of just four pitchers to throw 200-plus innings in each of the last four seasons (along with Mussina, Glavine, and the Big Unit). He had three straight 10-win seasons before going 9-16 in 2002. 10-7 so far this season for the Bucs.

5. Sox get Lyon and Martinez back, too
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 03:31 PM by MaineDem
We still have THAT Martinez!!! (snicker snicker)

The Red Sox completed a deal today with the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the 4 p.m. trading deadline in which they get pitchers Jeff Suppan and Brandon Lyon along with minor league pitcher Anastacio Martinez for infielder Freddy Sanchez and minor league lefthander Mike Gonzalez.

Suppan, 10-7 with a 3.57 ERA for the Pirates this season, was with the Red Sox from 1995-97. He was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the expansion draft prior top the 1998 season. He gives Boston the additional starting pitcher it was looking to get to help them down the stretch this season.

Lyon had been dealt to the Pirates last week along with Martinez in the deal that brought lefty Scott Sauerbeck and Gonzalez to Boston. Pittsburgh protested the trade when it was discovered Lyon had a frayed elbow.

11. Ventura in a coma is better than Adrian Beltre...
...plus the Dodgers need SOMEONE who knows how to hit. Maybe they figure the LA air will revive him.

9. Thanks MaineDem
Although I must confess that I really don't get my hopes up for the Sox until it's the 7th game of the WS with Boston up by 10 and 2 out in the bottom of the nineth.

Been burned too many times in the past

12. And the Reds got...
...two prospects and cash!

Looks like all that new stadium money just wasn't enough for 'em. Sad that I live in a major league town and couldn't give a shit about 'em.

Keep sending those positive vibes. I feel it's the year for the Sox, too. (I always say that, though.)

18. again those pitful Sox will be trumped by the Bombers
invincible line-up, All-Star Rotation and newly improved bullpen. I like the Arms race between the Yanks and Sox. Makes things more interesting.
