So I'm thinking of buying an X-Box.
I hear it has the best graphics processor and CPU. Plus it actually comes with an ethernet connection and a built-in hard drive.

And, I also hear that GTA Vice City will be out for X-Box this winter (minus the GTA moniker, to satisfy its contract with Sony). And this is the one game I must own.

I guess my question is, is there a reason not to buy an X-Box over its competitors? (Aside from the usual loathing of Bill Gates.)

1. If it helps you decide...
...I know someone that had a PS2 for like a year or so and then got an XBOX, so that probably says something.

I'm not sure, but if you're looking to use it as a DVD player too you have to pay extra for the remote control in order to use it as that (there's no game controller interface for the DVD player). I'm not sure if you have to pay extra like that for the PS2 (anyone? anyone?)

7. I am that person
even if you dont know me :). I had a PS2 for at least a year and got an XBox and now the PS2 gathers dust or is used for the occasional DVD.

The PS2 also requires you to pay extra for the remote control. You can use the controller and control DVD, but you still have to buy a memory card and DVD software which you load on the card that enables you to us DVD.

the Xbox is better

6. I have a PS2 and an xbox.
And I can't remember the last time I turned on the PS2.

You didn't mention the custom soundtrack option, which for me is the deal breaker/maker.
meaning that you can dump your music cd's to the hard drive and use them in some games.

Not all games have the feature, but if a game is on both systems, I'll get it for the xbox, if it does have it.

Being a lefty, I'm embarrased to say this.
But my favorite console game in many ways is Desert Storm.

I really dig real time strategy games and squad based tactics like in Rouge Spear and Ghost Recon.

DS has it all in spades.
And playing a little ACDC or Megadeath while your playing puts it way over the top.

For racing, check out Burnout2.
It totally rocks.

8. Go for it
Neither the Box nor the PS2 are State of the Art in PC terms - no console is at the moment.
PS2 had the better games in the past (FFX; GTA), but that is changing (KOTOR).
And comparing both: my XBOX has a finer, more stable picture. Especially DVDs are hardly worth watching on the station (this might be a European problem though).

I'd be happier.

SegaGT sucks, and that's ALL there is besides that PGR CRAP!

16. Xbox, technically
But developers are squeezing out better graphics from the PS2's "emotion" engine all the time.

Besides, graphics don't make a game, about 90% of the games for XBOX made in its first year look great, but are as fun playing as deep-frying turds.

17. XBOX
There are some great looking PS2 Games and there are some ugly XBOX games; but overall the XBOX graphics are superior.

20. X Box games look better (even comparing same titles)
But, you can't get GTA on X Box or Grand Turismo...But you can't get any Star Wars Games (good ones not Super Bombad Racing or Clone Wars) on PS2.

I think the PS2 offers more online, if you're into that.

But in reality for me, it comes down to GTA and Gran Tursimo or Halo and Jedi titles.

21. My problem is that I'm bored with all games
except fps. Everything else just seems so removed from being a hand's on experience anymore. I'm tired of trying to control groups of characters (rpgs and RTS), instead I want to feel like I'm the character. I think that feeling is missing a lot these days.

Some things were better done in turns.
