Post your Fly Fishing pet peeves here!
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 04:35 PM by Squatch
I know this will strike a nerve with about 2 or 3 other DUers, but I absolutely HATE HATE HATE when commercials incorporate fly fishing to convey some sort of solace, male bonding, or calling to the outdoors. I hate it even more...it sends me into a internal rage...when they don't even have the damned common courtesy to use somebody who knows how to fucking cast a fly line.

For a very recent and salient example, watch one of the Flomax commercials. Male UTI medicine coupled with a complete and utter imbicile who "casts" a fly like he's trying to huck a 3oz bullet weight into the next time zone.

I'm going to go drink some gin and tie a couple baetis emergers to calm my nerves.

Here: Watch the fucking commercial yourself

1. Whenever I fish in my fly in public, people give me weird looks.

What's that all about?

2. that's one of mine too!!!
another is the made-for-tv flyfishing "competitions" (ESPN, etc.)--which bring our avocation a little too close to Bass fishing and Nascar for my liking.

By the way, please note my avatar...and, for bonus points: What does my user name allude to?

4. That's a nice Salvelinus fontinalis you've got there.
You must really like SE Oregon.

Ever fished up in WA or ID?

yeah, i've fished around Boise (Boise River). The main destination of that trip, a couple months ago, was the Owyhee--it was really good. Also in ID--the Big Wood and Silver Creek--although the latter stumped me.

My only fishing in WA has been the Grande Ronde around Bogan's Oasis...I do fish a lot in the Wallowas. In OR, Deschutes and Blitzen are two of my faves. Unfortunately I live in Louisiana, so I have to pick and choose my rivers carefully. I've been thinking of trying the Yakima.

Where are your favorite haunts?

8. The Yak is a good C&R Blue-Ribbon fishery
Your best bet is to hook up with a guide on the Yak.

I've fished all over:

ID: Kelly Creek, NF Clearwater, Lochsa, Salmon, St Joe
MT: Big Hole, Big Horn, each of the 3 Forks, Lolo, Rock Creek
WA: Nisqually, Deschutes (yes, there's a Deschutes in WA, too), Grande Ronde, Dry Falls, Sanpoil, Dosewalips and a whole bunch more

Since I live in coastal VA, I mainly fish the salt, nowadays. But, after a few hours of whipping 75 feet of 9-weight around, you start to miss that nice and mushy 3-weight.

10. thanks, I'll try the Yak
am thinking seriously about the Big Horn this May--have never fished it. Or maybe the Bow--fished it once a couple summers ago; not great numbers for me but really nice rainbows (20-23") on the dry. You should try the Owyhee in the Fall--lots and lots of very large browns.

I've only fished saltwater a couple times--people down here tell me I should try for redfish and specks, but I prefer saving my money for trips out West.

14. I don't know if you have already, but try fishing Appalachia...
especially NC, WV, and VA (it's a long weekend from LA). If you're ever up this way, drop me a line and we'll hook up. (moving to DC soon...)

The fishing up here is very tactical. You've got to snoop and poop in these eastern mountain streams to hook up on the wild trout. One of my favorite areas, even though it's fished very heavily, is the C&R section of the Rapidan. Good brookie fishing, plus you can sit on President Hoover's deck and have lunch.

5. Fake smokers too
Nothing pisses me off more than watching a movie and see somebody who has obviously never taken a drag in their life suck it in then blow it out right away. Just don't have the person smoke! I am smoke free now but it still bugs me.
I agree on the fly fishing thing as well:)

9. To be entirely fair....
Some of us are just lousy at casting flies. I've been fly fishing for a decade now, and self-proclaimed "experts" (some of whom have only been doing it a few years) are constantly telling me that I cast wrong and that I manhandle my rod. Funny thing is, I've never NOT caught something.

11. But, the whole thing behind FF is you have to catch fish with *style*
Do you watch the tip of your rod when you cast?

But I smack my float line into the water like a pro! Audible splash and everything! I was fishing up near my dad's house in Oregon a few months ago, with about 10 of us on a short stretch of river, when I managed to hook the same tree TWICE. My leader snapped when I was trying to pull it down the second time, and as far as I know my favorite muddler minnow is still up in that tree. I was very embarassed.

Still, I pulled in three trophy steelhead on barbless hooks that day, which isn't bad in my book. I just wish I had that muddler back.

12. The time my dad caught my head.
That was a total pet peeve. He gave up his feeble attempt at fly fishing after that. I haven't done it in a few years, but I always enjoyed it. I do mostly salt-water fishing now and I don't have a suitable fly rod for that.

13. I really hate the tiny hooks they tie on flys
It's very hard to secure a good worm on them.

19. Silly Squatch. Flomax is a BPH medicine, not UTI.
:hide:

The thing I hate about fly fishing is the ridiculous amount of $$$$$ Mr. Midlo spends on it. Kidding. He likes it, so it's fine by me.

20. Its probably as frustrating as watching climbing in a commercial
If I climbed they way they do in most commercials/TV/movies I would have been dead a long time ago.
