That was some show early this morning with lions getting a kill, glad I didn't miss it.

1. The lioness at the right looks like she is
eating something... left from the earlier kill?

5. I wonder what the other animals are doing for water with the lions hanging around the water hole.
The lions must be full now.

10. Check it out for a few days
and you'll hear a lot of strange and scary sounds. The hyenas and baboons especially can sound positively demonic.

12. I spent a summer in Central Africa in 1978
in a house deep in the jungle forest.

The night sounds were amazing- but the funniest thing was that I could hear the hippos stomachs growling at night. Sounds just like a human stomach only much louder! They would walk around the area within a block or so of the house at night, but during the day they would stay in the river.

I didn't go walking at night.

13. You probably already know this , but,
except for snakes, more people in africa are killed by hippos than any other animal.

Just heard a lion roar near the mic. Impressive!

14. I heard stories of people who tried crossing the river
when the hippos were nearby, and they were killed.

The closest I got was walking with a group to a spot about a block away from the river where there were a bunch of hippos in the middle of the day. They didn't really appear to look at us, but they let us know quite loudly when we had gotten as close as they would allow. They kept an eye on us, but they didn't threaten us.

They aren't very fast, but they're huge and I would hate to have one mad at me!

I was scared of snakes, but I never saw one the whole 10 weeks.

There were elephants in the area too, although the only time I actually saw them was from the plane. At night the native people would leave someone to keep watch in the garden - to keep the elephants from eating the corn. Its hard for one person to chase an elephant out of a garden so sometimes I would hear people yelling for help at night and about 10 people would be running down the road with torches to shoo away the elephant. I was invited to join them, but I didn't have the nerve.

People were (illegally) hunting the African elephants while I was there for the ivory. They would shoot the animal and cut off the tusks for the ivory and leave it to die. The africans would eat it, and I did have elephant for lunch. I bet there aren't many left today.

15. Absolutely gorged. They can't even move.
Amazing stuff.

Their stomachs are so distended with food that all they can do is lay on their backs with their feet in the air and pant.

16. Now might be a good time to get a drink.
The lions would have a hard time catching anything.

21. I've been trying to figure it out also.
on their website I saw a couple photos of open vehicles with people driving nearby and know there is a building not too far away. Full lions are the best kind to be around, safetywise. Heard 1 person talking about the big male a bit ago, not sure who they are. Off to check their forum.

25. This has been amazing!
Mr. Gen and I have been watching on and off over the past 36 hours and the lions have been so fascinating. I don't think they plan on moving on until that carcass is cleaned.

Mr. Gen also takes a peak at a couple of hibernating bears on a link on the wavelit site...not as much action as the waterhole, but they do get up and stretch from time to time.
