Poll question: If someone posted that his PC had been destroyed
Because a vandal dropped it off a 50-story building, and it was smashed to smithereens and lots of important data was irretrievably lost, how many people would respond to his post by telling him to get a Mac?

1. Just another Mac gloating thread, I see.
I'd tell him buy what he can afford, and since PC's are appliances and require no ego to operate, it would be the perfect computer for him.

2. Um, no, it's the opposite kind of thread
Because I have a PC and the kneejerk get-a-Mac response annoys me so much.

I assumed that would be obvious, but maybe it's not.

7. I know personally only two who own Macs
And between them, they've had more problems with their systems than all the PC owners I know combined.

Of course, YMMV, but I'm always amazed when one of them laments the latest in a long string of $1,000.00 problems to be corrected.

4. A brazillion, all Mac owners who haven't touched a PC in ten years.
Oh and among the PC owners, there would be several brazillion who would respond by blaming IE and suggesting he get Opera or Firefox.

24. I use the tool I need.
When it's Autocad, it's PC. When it was Pro Tools, it was Mac. I'm good with either. One day I'll fool around with Linux maybe, but my automotive hobby takes up my free time. Still, I have frequently been quite annoyed at Windows and at having to fix machines using it. I am my own IT guy.

13. Maybe the guy was using it on the first floor
And the vandal was a Mac lover who took the PC up to the roof and threw it off because he wanted to see this poll posted because he wanted to know how DUers would answer!

17. Well, it seems to me
A long time PC user, that there must be something wrong with a lot of Macs--my friend Steve has something like 6 Macs, from one of the really old ones all the way up to one of the newest ones, and either he can't get one to do something he wants so he has to put it on one of the others, or something else is wrong, because he ends up splitting his time on different ones for productivity to internet to some other function. My old PC managed to do everything I needed for 6 years, and the one before that did everything for about 7 years, and my second oldest did it for about 5 years. I was even able to harvest the hard drives out of each and use them in the newer machines until they were too small in space to be of much good. So I don't know what the problem is with my friend and his Macs, because if you can't save time by using a single computer, you are wasting valuable and precious time switching between computers.

I've never yet regretted going with the PC, and I have worked with Macs, so I know what they're like in comparison. PCs just tend to be more like the VHS format, while Mac users can proudly proclaim their 'puters are more like the Beta format. While Beta owners knew instinctively that the format was better than the VHS format, it was the VHS format (and the PC format) that took off at a fast run and never looked back. The same is pretty much going on in the two different computer worlds, and while Macs are fantastic for some things, it's the PC that has lured people since the very beginning.

A lot of that is because of the proprietary software and hardware--it's difficult to understand now, for example, why Apple never allowed other companies to copy their technology, while PC clones were available right from the start. And since companies could be competitive, they were able to bring the cost down to the point where more people could afford them. We can attack Microsoft all we want, but it's pretty much the same on the Mac side of things--Apple held things so close to the chest that no one could even consider finding ways to market alternatives.

The ownership of Macs is a very small compartment of the whole computing industry, and there is room for anyone who can find a niche in it. Since it all revolves around a wide assortment of peripherals, other hardware and tons of software, no one can say that they don't have choices.

And that pretty much goes for consumers as well--there are gamers, graphic artists, photographers, office workers and a million other areas out there for development. I can't see Macs appealing to as many different users, though, because the software is a lot more limited.

Regardless, I'll take my PC over a Mac any day of the week.

19. This Mac user would buy him a drink and giving a hug
Since I use both Macs and PCs, I can deal with both of them (but prefer the Mac).

Would pretty well be useless after that.
