who here caught 24 last night? wow the ending of that second episode was awesome, and scary.

jack having a break down, but then sees the nuke go off, and seems once again steeled to do what he has to do.

19. Lots of good four more do the terrorists
The only guy who could get the first one to go off has been vaporized.
If they could have lit off the other 4 without his help. Then why start with all the crap just to get that one guy released?

BTW - IIRC The real Suitcase Nukes were the size of coffins and took two to carry.

27. well based on the time line
this takes place several years in the future. each season has been any where between 18 months and 3 years apart in show time. that means about 10 years have passed since season 1. it is about 2011 or so. it is possible that by then suitcase bombs have been reduced in size

17. Actually Jack was 5 or 20 miles away (I dont' remember which)...
So he wasn't hurt by it. The people in the immediate 1/2 mile radius was killed, and there's a small area outside that that will be affected by the fallout. THey went over that last night on the show.

26. It was a small one kiloton tactical nuke.
1/2 mile radius, and depending on the wind, he could be ok. Not safe, but if he gets the hell out of there, he's ok. They will start evacuating the area, and saves as many people as possible. And he was like 5 miles away. Skip just reminded me.

It's a TV show, for Pete sake! Enjoy it for what it is, not because who else might or might not enjoy it!

Edited to add: Bill Clinton watches it, too. He was asked onsome show and he said he was looking forward to 24.

18. Wow, so some Republicans like a show so you can't watch it?
How silly. They don't get it. They think it's a cheering section when in fact they're critical of the Bush administration every chance they get. It's WAY too cerebral for them to get it. They just like the violence and explosions.

4. Holy mother of crap. I was reeling enough about Curtis, I didn't think THAT
was going to happen. It was like a mirror image of last season's opener, where a million horrible things happened in the first five minute. This time it was the last five minutes. Why didn't Jack just shoot Curtis in the hand?

Anyway, I sat there with my mouth open, totally speechless, for about five minutes. Wow.

7. With Curtis pretty much positioned directly behind Assad (sp?)
I don't think there was much leeway where Jack could shoot Curtis.

Yeah, it's a show that stretches credibility every other minute but high drama pretty much required that Jack go for the kill.

8. That's why I was thinking Jack would shoot him in the hand. Curtis wouldn't be able
to fire his weapon but he wouldn't be dead. There could've been a lot of drama with an injured Curtis in disbelief and shock over the fact that Jack just shot him. I know what you're saying though, the producers definitely like to go for the most possible drama.

11. The part that made me LAUGH
The guy, his wife, and the teenage son couldn't take the wounded terrorist kid holding them hostage in their living room? The wounded kid who could barely walk and was popping narcotics for the pain? But later on the dad kills a guy with his bare hands?

20. They were seriously in shock that this kid they were friends with was holding a gun on them.
Thank God his wife wasn't as fucking stupid as he was to follow the orders instead of calling the cops. His wife was freaking brilliant compared to him. ALWAYS call the cops. They have ways of fixing shit, kind of like what Jack did. Oh and speaking of how the fixed it, why are all the supporting agents dumb ass trigger happy dip shits? The guy who made the noise that made the guy blow up, and the guy who shot Ahmed. When Jack says to hold your fire, you fucking hold your fire.

16. I'm no nuke expert
But the nuke was supposed to go off in a place with lots of people. Special ops shows up early basically causing terrorist to detonate in the warehouse. Well obvioulsy those in the warehouse are dead. How far away from the warehouse do people have to be not to be injured or made sick? Jack sees the mushroom cloud in the distance but he's not that far from the looks of it.

29. effects of a 1 kiloton ground level detonation
Taken from the following site. They also have figures for 10kT and 100kT fission explosions. I included only the figures given for a 1kT device.

I don't know the population density of the area where it was detonated. Twenty miles north of Magic Mountain? I've been all over CA but not south of Monteray or north of Valencia/Santa Clarita. It looked like some kind of industrial park.

http://www.nti.org/e_research/cnwm/overview/technical3.asp

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The fireball from a 1-kiloton explosion at ground level would reach a radius of 150 meters. Everything within this radius would be completely destroyed.

A blast-wave overpressure of 5 pounds per square inch, which is associated with winds around 150 miles per hour, is enough to destroy wood-frame buildings and cause severe damage to brick apartment buildings; overpressure of this magnitude would be experienced at about 500 meters from a 1-kiloton surface explosion.

Prompt Ionizing Radiation: The distance from a 1-kiloton surface explosion at which a person in the open could receive a prompt dose of 500 rem from neutrons and gamma rays (the dose that will prove fatal within 30 days to about half the people receiving it) is around 1,100 meters.

A nuclear fireball radiates energy in infrared, visible, and ultraviolet wavelengths with enough intensity to burn exposed skin and char or ignite flammable materials at substantial distances. For a 1-kiloton surface explosion, the radiant intensities on a clear day are sufficient to cause second-degree burns on exposed skin at 600 meters.

Local fallout occurs when a nuclear weapon explodes close enough to the ground to vaporize and entrain in the fireball much larger amounts of solid material than that from which the weapon is made. When this vaporized material later cools and condenses into liquid and solid particles, many of these end up heavy enough to fall to the ground rather than remaining suspended in the atmosphere, and they carry with them a substantial fraction of the radioactive fission products and activation products produced in the explosion. The spatial pattern over which such fallout is deposited depends strongly on the wind patterns and atmospheric stability prevailing at the time. It is possible to make a rough estimate for the area over which a given dose from fallout will typically be equaled or exceeded, however. If the dose at the boundary of the area of interest is taken to be 500 rem within 48 hours to unprotected persons who do not leave the area, the answer comes out around 3 square kilometers per kiloton of fission energy release.
