OMG my son just got back from WALKING to town.
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 08:29 PM by Kali
It is 12 miles by interstate, one way. He took utility right-of-ways so that adds probably a mile or so. He left at 10 this morning and got back around 6. Said he bummed around town for a while. Will get more detail when he recovers.

It's almost a 1000 foot elevation change as well (up hill on the way back). I'm impressed.

This is what reading can do. I just finished Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" - a humorous account of attempting the Appalachian Trail. Passed the book on to him and he got motivated to do a long one. (now why didn't it motivate me?)

1. don't feel bad...
I read that book too and it didn't inspire me to hike 12 miles either. Good book though

4. Not much of anything motivates me to walk/hike. I really don't like walking.
Now reading about taking a horse on the Arizona Trail - YEAH!

I want to read his Australia book next. Planning to go when I hit 50.

2. Yikes
It's wise to start slow, learn which shoes really fit and which don't if you're going out for a LONG walk.

Hope he had a cell, too, in case something happened

3. Well he and his brother have walked down there several times and he does a hike or some
hill climbing most everyday but 24-5 miles is pretty far for anybody!

I figured he would call from town for a ride but he didn't. We know the route (especially his bro) but it was getting pretty close to dark and there is about a hlf mile that isn't really accesible to a vehicle - that would have been the only bad part after dark.

These kids are pretty tough, the youngest learned to ride a bike in dirt/sand/rocks with flat tires - I always thought it would be so amusing to see how fast he would go if he got on a aired up set of tires and pavement!

5. Sounds like you are a proud parent then
No real danger, just a parent's worry. Your kid sounds like me when I was younger, gone for hours/overnight, whatever and when they come back it's "HEY, AM I NOT BACK?" ;-)

7. Get that boy a set of running shoes
Tell him if he'd just done it a bit faster he would've almost had a marathon! :D

8. he's 6'4" and size 14 shoes
If he wants to run he can do it barefoot like the Raramuri (Tahumara) just a little south of us.

Guess it's the old cowboy genes. Walking means either your vehicle broke down or you got thrown off your horse.

12. I love to walk but I don't think I'd attempt a 12+ mile hike.
The most I've done is hike Sabino Canyon outside Tucson, about a 4-5 mi round trip.
The scenery made it very worthwhile.

Good for your son. He'll stay healthy that way!
