4. It is a fantasy game.
People go there to pretend they are eating great food. The more you go the more you advance. The rules are very complex but, if you have tenacity you will learn them all. the goal is to become a Grand Olive.

7. If I recall correctly...
someone said they were visiting New York, and asked for restaurant recommendations.

and someone else recommended Olive Garden.

it went downhill from there.

30. There were threads before that too.
The issue had already been primed by one or two threads about Olive Garden being crap. But I think it was only after that thread that it became a running joke.

20. It's moderately good Italian food
and probably about all you can get in some areas of the country. To the food snobs, though, who live in large cities where you can't step in dog shit without seeing ethnic restaurants, Olive Garden is TEH SUPREEM EVIL OMGz.

22. Seriously, I can think of worse places to eat...
I was eating at a Sweet Tomatoes (salads and pasta) one night and the noise of screaming kids in there was literally about to make me scream when this kid about 8 or so comes running around the corner by my table headed for the bathroom and just stopped dead in his tracks and hurled in the floor. I almost lost it right there....never, ever been back.

25. Italians who know something about American restaurants comment on
the enormous portions and also on all the sauce put on pasta. In Italy they don't put a lot of sauce on top of pasta, so it would probably look sparse to Americans. Of course, I don't have to tell you how wonderful ITalian pasta courses taste.

One Italian did tell me she liked American ice cream better than gelato because of its higher dairy fat. I liked the gelato better myself. The Italians don't eat gelato for dessert; it is more a snack for them and you can get tiny servings if you want just a little.

In Perugia I had hot chocolate at an elegant chocolate bar. It came in a demitasse cup. The whipped cream was in an accompanying glass approx. the size of a shot glass. Needless to say, that was one helluva cup of hot chocolate.

29. It is one of the key 'catch phrases' guaranteed to make heads explode on DU.
Here's a sampling:
1. Damn, the food at Olive Garden is great! I go there every time I'm in New York City!

2. I do all my shopping at Walmart! I'm in everyday low price heaven!

3. You're a douchebag.

4. I'm sad that poor Anna Nicole Smith had to die.

5. So how big IS John Edwards' house again?

Of course, there are many more. Collect them all!
