1. My DVD player snuffed it after 16 months...
That's why anything with mechanical parts is more likely to fail. Especially if they're cheaply built.

Any PDA with a 8GB CF card will outlast any mechanical brick. Assuming the CF card doesn't go over the theoretical 100,000 write cycles but no doubt they've improved on that since...

2. The iPod Death Clock
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 10:00 PM by Breeze54
Wasn't there a battery recall for the IPods?

The iPod Death Clock

When will my iPod Croak? Depending on how you use (or abuse) it, we can
take a guess at how long your little friend has left in this world.
Curious? Type in your serial number.

What a bummer!

3. It should still be covered under the warranty,
shouldn't it? If there is an Apple store near you take it in and see if they will give you a replacement. Also, it could just be in a hard sleep. Have you tried doing a hard reset?

Found this via "the google"

If you happen to have this happen.....
1)Plug it into your 'puter.
2)Choose "Run diagnostics" in the help tab at the top.
3)Follow the directions.

There is something called the "5 R's"....Reset-Retry-Restart-Reinstall-Restore
Apple says this will solve most problems. Just go in order 'til it's ok.
I had to go as far as Restart before it unlocked......but it's fine now.
Just in case anyone else runs into this problem.

4. Good points, especially the replacement one.

Hard drives usually die within 3 months or after 3 years, I've noted...

9. one thing Apple has is great repair service
if you are under warranty or Applecare, that is. My ancient, but still Applecared, 4 g 20 blew out a week ago last sunday. I had a box at my door on Tuesday morning, and a replacement on Friday. I have also walked into Apple stores in three cities, including overseas, and swapped it out.

11. Do you work in IT?
That's the first thing they always say.

"uuuuuh...Did you reboot it?"

12. LOL....no, but I thought my iPod had died a couple of weeks ago....
...and resetting it did the trick. Same thing happened to another DUer about a week ago (and resetting revived it), so it might be worth a try.

8. Did you do iPod CPR?
I have one, too. When it's dead, I first try pushing in the center and up-arrow buttons at the same time for at least 30 seconds. That usually works.

Or, if I haven't used it in two or three days, it plays dead until I plug it into a computer and charge it.

When my iPod actually did die, I took it into an Apple Store and they replaced it free on the spot, even though I'd had it about a year.

13. I had that problem too
lucky for me my parents had the foresight to also buy the product replacement plan from Better Buy. All I had to do is bring it to them and they gave me a whole new one. I didn't bring the headphones or anything with it, they just hooked me up with everything no questions asked.

15. The worst part is how much money you have on the player
in songs. My daughters 20gb coughed 6 months after we gave it to her, luckily she had saved the music on her computer. When it came back, we re-gifted it (they fucked us and sent a new one, so if she hadn't save the music, we'd have been pissed).

Bought her a 30GB Creative in the month it took for it to return. That's 4+ years now, trouble free and the battery is easily replaceable.

Good luck.
