Seriously, this "burping" thing makes me feel like a big meanie.

Whack! Whack! Whack! ("Burp!")

Who came up with this "burp the babies" plan? Who figured out that whacking an infant on their back was "good" for them? And that if you didn't do it, their tummies would get upset and then you'd feel like a REALLY bad mother?

It just feels CRUEL! My babies are so tiny -- and because I'm "cupping" my hand when I'm smacking them on the back (especially in the middle of the night) it sounds like I'm beating them black and blue. They usually just have "confused" looks on their faces while I'm doing it (as opposed to the roars of outrage and child abuse when I use a "cold" wipe on them while changing their diaper, or the pitiful whines of starvation if food isn't served as quickly as Their Highnesses demand upon wakefulness), and I know they won't remember it, but I will.

I'm Evil. :( And they are unbelievably CUTE!!!

Here are some photos of them -- they are 26 days old today! :)

Before Dinner: "Mom is conspiring to starve us to death!"

During Dinner: "All is forgiven!"

Daddy and the Babies -- aren't I a lucky woman?

I'm feeling pretty happy -- tired, but happy! :)

3. They're gorgeous
Congratulations. I get kind of choked up when I see tiny ones like that, your babies are completely adorable.

Regarding the burping though, do you put them on your shoulder and pat? The technique I used was to sort of sit them on my lap and bend them over one arm so that their tummies are kind of resting on your arm and then use a circular rubbing on the back instead of patting. I don't know if that explanation makes any sense but that method seemed to produce pretty good burps from my kids.

Wishing you early through-the-night sleeping :)

5. They are cute!
Burping such tiny bodies does make you feel like a monster, doesn't it? But I swear they seem to like it, relaxing into your hand or body as you pound on them. Your wee ones have adorable faces too. I'm glad to hear they are doing well and that you are actually surviving!

6. They're adorable.
Great news that they are home and flourishing.

They may be tiny now, but they will grow. The triplets were born six weeks early and so were tiny, but now are tall for their age. Of course, we are a tall family on all sides and they inherited our tall genes.

7. What beautiful babies! When my daughter was an infant...
I found that rubbing her back in an up and down motion seemed to get the burps going. Had to press a little bit as I rubbed (something between a light rub and a tissue massage), but it got it going.

14. Instead of patting them to burp, try just bouncing gently while rubbing their backs
If the idea is to let the air out thru the pie hole (or at this stage, the boobie hole), then the gentler you do this the better.

If the idea is just to beat them, the Bible says don't spare the rod.

22. They are adorable - congratulations!
I'm glad that my daughter was 16 months old when we adopted her - if I had to burp so tiny a morsel of humanity as a newborn, I'd be a basket case. A friend of mine used to put her babies on her lap on their stomachs, and raise her legs up and down while rubbing their backs to burp them. It seemed to work.

I remember those days well. It does get easier, I promise. My older son was 20 months old when my twins came home. I can honestly say the first three months were a blur. Here is a picture of my little guys now. They will be three in June. It goes by so fast!
