Where Are You From? Where Were You Born? Where Do You Live Now?

I'll go first okay? I was born in Paris, France. I was raised in Montreal, Quebec. I now live in Ottawa, Canada's capitol. As an aside, I speak primarily French and am not too bad in English. I write English far better than I speak it BTW.

And you?

Things have changed a lot for him and for me.

He doesn't live here now but he has a nice library and store. I've got a license plate that says "I miss Bill" from there.

15. Uhhhh...not really
I've got a southern accent when I get around others with one. However, my parent were both from around Lexington, KY, and their accents were more mid-western. And growing up in Ft. Laud. where every other person is a displaced New Yorker...well, you get the picture.

Oddly enough, my husband and his sister are both born and raised New Orleanians. She has a distinct "magnolia" southern accent. Whereas his is more French-Canadian. He sounds like Peter Jennings did.

7. Me.
I was born in Hartford, CT.

I'm from Washington DC...I lived there for 8 1/2 years. I can pass for a life-long native so I think it's fair to claim it as my hometown.

I currently live in Burlington, CT...which is a lot like Hell but with more trees.

I currently work in Southington, CT...which is a lot like Hell but with strip malls on a tourist trap center-drag (Queen St.).

35. You got me. We have TWO Volvos in our driveway. That, by itself, confirms
your position.

You got us. (Hey, is it a mitigating factor that one of of those Volvos is a convertible with an absurd amount of turbo boost and horsepower and gets really lousy gas mileage, and really WILL hit 155 MPH (yes, that's MILES per hour, not those weenie kilometers you use up there in Canada), before hitting the rev limiter? Which I know is the truth because I've actually done it, though damn, was there some flapping protest from the convertible top when I did?)

then you'd be right. I went from being a happy, well-adjusted girl to being scorned by all my peers. I ate lunch in the library the entire first year of school because nobody would have a thing to do with me. Finally I applied to be an exchange student just to get the fuck out of there.

Salem is a horrible town full of dead people.

I was born under a wand'rin' star,
Wheels are made for rollin'
Mules are made to pack,
I never seen a sight that didn't look better lookin' back;
I was born under a wand'rin' star.
Mud can make you pris'ner and the plains can make you dry.
Snow can burn you eyes but only people make you cry.
Home is made for comin' from, for dreams of goin' to
Which, with any luck will never come true.
I was born under a wand'rin' star.
I was born under a wand'rin' star.

Do I know where hell is? Hell is in hello.
Heaven is "Goodbye forever. It's time for me to go."

When I get to heaven, tie me to a tree,
Or I'll begin to roam and soon you'll know where I will be.

I was born under a wand'rin' star.
A wand'rin', wand'rin' star.

75. Ugh, this is depressing. Here goes. Born in Crystal Lake, IL. Spent four years
in Champaign-Urbana for college. Have lived ever since in Chicago, IL.

I've wanted to move to the west coast for at least the last decade, but unless some miracle occurs that's probably never going to happen.

It's certainly not helping that it's April-effing-8th and it's something like 29 degrees outside right now.

I'm going back to bed...

84. What kind of work do you do, Grace? You might enjoy visiting beautiful Portland, Oregon!
We moved here from Boston, Massachusetts nine years ago this month. Husband was born in Massachusetts and hated winter, "the season of death" -- I was raised in Miami, Florida and hate the heat. Both of us have compromised here. Husband and son-in-law don't get seasonal affective disease and do much better here. We have mild winters with little snow, but there is significant winter overcast with clouds and "sunbreaks." However, we have the very best summers -- no rain at all from July through September -- and usually not too hot, and not too cold. You can go from the mountains to the Oregon Coast in a couple of hours.

Portland is a fun place for us -- small enough to be a mid-sized city, but not that big in feeling-tone.

There are tons of good sites on visiting this place.

Hope you read this in the morning!

In peace,

Radio Lady Ellen in Oregon

PS. Thursday was gorgeous, and our high temp Friday was 78 degrees -- broke a record for that one day!
Today it was sunny in the high 50s in the morning, with rain this afternoon. Everything is blooming, too!

95. I absolutely LOVE Portland. I have a whole bunch of family in Washington state
(two siblings in Olympia and three in Seattle) and on our last visit we decided to drive down to Portland for a few days. I knew I was going to love it and I was right. I love the fact that it's a very hip, urban, funky city with all the things I like about cities but then it's soooooo easy to be out in nature.

In Chicago, you have to drive for hours and hours and hours to be away from the suburban sprawl, and even then you're just in cornfields. Gawd, sometimes I think if I have to visit one more lame state park in the midwest and try to pretend it's even half as beautiful as the gorgeous scenery in Oregon, Washington or Northern California, I'm going to stab myself in the eye.

So yeah, Portland has been very high on my list for years, along with Northern California, Seattle and Vancouver. The rain/clouds don't really bother me because there is so much natural beauty around that is enhanced by it. In Chicago, it's lovely during the summer (when it's not too hot and humid, that is) but then all the leaves fall off the trees and it's just dreadful (and plenty gray) during the winter. "Season of death" is a very apt description.

The problem lies in convincing my husband to move. He loves his job here and it's got about as much job security as any job can possibly have. These days, especially in his field, that's a huge consideration. He loves the Pac NW and Northern Cal as much as I do, but he's terrified about finding steady work that he enjoys. I totally get that, and I am trying to be patient and supportive, but this place is really, really wearing on me. I'm to the point that I don't care if I have to work at a coffee shop, I just want to get out of the Midwest. But unless I want to divorce my husband (which I don't), I'm stuck here for a very long, long time.

Part of me really blames BushCo for me still being here. If those assholes weren't driving our economy into the ground, I bet my husband would be much less nervous about moving. The theft of the 2004 election was especially bitter for me because of this.

Oh well, I guess at least I have family in the Pac NW and I have an excuse to visit fairly often. That's something.

at least on visits. We get to Vancouver and Victoria, BC quite often -- and Seattle has been a great "jumping off" place, too (although it seems to be burdened with terrible traffic). We try to go on holidays -- 4th of July, Labor Day, Christmas -- when the cars are not so prominent on the highways.

I understand your pulls about hubby's job. The economy here completely dropped out from under my software engineer husband in 2001, and we were forced to retire five years earlier than anticipated. However, it has all worked out for the best. Our travels are taking us all over the world at this time -- I'm going to be 68 next month, and he turns 73 in June.

Nice to talk with you on the DU!

In peace,

Radio Lady Ellen in Oregon

I've lived in some very rural counties in NE GA as well but, for now, I'm enjoying the city life.

I'd love to live in Beaufort, SC when I retire (that is IF I can ever retire!). That's the second oldest city in SC and where The Prince of Tides, Forest Gump and The Big Chill, among mnay other movies, were filmed. I love the old city on the bay, the downtown waterfront park and marina, the cabbage palmettos, the live oaks ans the beautiful beaches at Hunting Island SP and the tidal creeks and salt marshes!
