Am I the only one who watches golf but doesn't root for Tiger Woods?
I just don't understand this "root for the favorite" mentality that is on display at these tournaments. I mean people act like they're having an orgasm when Tiger sinks a putt as if they had something to do with it. Personally, I get much more satisfaction out of seeing someone like Zach Johnson, who has only one victory on the tour, leading the Masters than I would to see Tiger overtake him and win another green jacket. Is there something wrong with me?

Go watch the opening scene of Patton again.

Of course golf fans root for the overdog. That's why they're golf fans

2. I don't root for Tiger either.
Nothing against him. Just generally prefer the underdog.

4. I think most athletes are right wingers, especially golfers. And I don't feel bad for any of them
no matter how bad they lose. I guess it just seems strange to see people get so excited about the rich getting richer.

10. According to Newsmeat.com, The majority of political donations of golfers goes to the Repubs
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 09:22 AM by irkthesmirk
Republican donors include: Paul Azinger, Ben Crenshaw, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Peter Jacobsen, Tom Kite, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, David Toms, Lanny Watkins, and Tom Watson. Two Democratic supporters are Brad Faxon and Jon Daly. There are some other nice surprises on the list: Phil Fulmer, Bob Griese, Digger Phelps, Brian Urlacher, and Don Shula.

7. He is
from his father a green beret ( he is nicknamed after his dad's Vietnam bud-safe to say that they saw lots together)

tiger is on the right. That is excusable in that he does a lot of really good works. Anyway his wife is probably working on it if you have never seen her lets just say it is safe to say that she is going to be very persuasive....as any wife is.

At least he isn't Mickelson. Phil's chief sponsors are Exxon and Bearing Point. Don't know what Bearing Point is? Google it-the chief "consultants" charged with justifying the theft of oil from the Iraqi people. "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" type stuff. They are a part of the problem.

6. it's about excellence -- and watching
someone perform at the top of their ability.

i don't like gold period.

but tiger woods is poetry in motion -- the way his body is so in tune with what he wants to accomplish, incredible eye/hand co-ordination, mental toughness that is mostly above those competing around him.

but -- you know -- what ever...

8. I don't root for him.
He just doesn't get me all excited.

I like Phil better. When I do watch golf, which isn't often, I root for Phil. I have met him through work and he's a nice guy. Not that I don't think Tiger is but it seems like after I meet someone and they're generally nice, I tend to root for them.

9. I just like the crowd
especially the guys who get real drunk real fast and then yell at the top of their lungs when someone hits the ball

"YOU THE MAN!"
:toast:   :puke:

or

"GO IN THE HOLE"

because yelling at a ball affects the ballistic path, if God is on your side

12. Bartcop is a jackass
He once went off on Mariah Carey calling her a rightwing whore because of some remarks she allegedly made about how icky the starving people in Africa were. I'm pretty sure you know the ones I mean. Anyway, that story has been pretty well debunked. I e-mailed him and told him that and pointed out that she's never said anything about politics one way or the other. He basically told me to shut the fuck up because he was running an entertainment website and he didn't care if what he said was true or not. Isn't this what Rush Limbaugh always says?

His view on Tiger is also based on a misconception. It's about the time Tiger refused to go to some sort of function Bill Clinton was at - I believe it was the 50th anniversary of the integration of Major League Baseball - an event honoring Jackie Robinson. Tiger was invited to sit with Clinton and the other "luminaries" at the head table. He declined the invitation because he said that Clinton never paid attention to him or invited him to anything when he was the college champion so the only reason he could possibly have for doing it now was to exploit Tiger's popularity and his status as the first African-American to win the Masters. Of course, all the lefties decided that Tiger was a rightwinger who didn't go because he hated Clinton. They also said this was a White House dinner - it wasn't. Later, Juan Williams said he spoke to Tiger and told him he was wrong not to go - that the event was about honoring another great African-American pioneer and that he should have gone for that reason. Tiger has since said that in retrospect, he should have gone.

14. I posted this a few days ago, but...
I think the primary reason for the adulation given Woods is his skin color, combined with the fact that golf isn't a "black sport." I just can't hang with that.

I'm not taking anything away from his skill — the guy's amazing. But there have been other amazing golfers who didn't get near the love Woods has.

Anyway, if I'm gonna pull for a golfer, it'll probably be one on the senior tour — Fred Couples, because he designed a local course and hosted an annual skins-type game there, with four pros teamed with local golfers; or Craig Stadler, because he's funny. And, somehow, I find myself on John Daly's side — maybe because I've fought demons similar to his.
