1. aside from contemporary knocking of them (in various venues), I seriously
can't recall any song of theirs. They seem to have only seared my memory by other peoples' mock.

4. I remember the name - it was big when I was in highschool
(I think) - but drawing a blank. Don't recall Dream Police. Odd I have a great mind for trivia - but it is failing me this evening.

6. BTW, here's how my scale would go
Of the ones mentioned:

Beach Boys, Cheap Trick - two of the best ever

The Doors - excellent

Aerosmith - good

Pink Floyd - good, but some of their hits stand out a lot more than their other stuff

KISS - don't like

what about STYX?

(You have greater perspective than I, and I enjoy reading your ranking relative to one another of these groups)

13. I haven't heard a whole lot of Styx, but what I heard is..
kind of "eh," especially on the ballads. "Lorelei" is a good rock song.

16. there early albums are the best... they got commercial
and I stopped listening. If one can find Pieces of Eight, or The Grand Illusion - those are worth listening to.

18. They got a bit outdated IMO
And some of their rock riffs were better done by Boston on Boston's first CD. Thanks for the info. :hi:

22. Ironically, Renegade was a fav - almost a themesong
for a friend and I... she, it fit. Me - not so much. Was about as un-renogadish as one could have been at that age. Maybe that was part of the appeal (and that it was a great song!)

This shows how you can't always trust first impressions. They are better than I thought.

35. It's been too long
in my teen memory I would say Pieces of Eight, but I would have to hear both again to make a good rec. Try a thread just with Styx - though NOTE you are looking for the early stuff (pre-total commercial fluff). Bet you would find one or two who could make a really good recommendation.

Now if you were asking me about Squeeze - then I could make a recommendation :D

34. Styx had about 5 decent albums.
"Equinox", which has the song "Lorelei" that you're talking about, is decent, some songs on all of their albums are just cheesy, but I'd say "Equinox" has about 4 decent songs on it. - another DUer downthread mentioned "The Grand Illusion" and "Pieces Of Eight" which are good as well. On the former, every song is at least decent, and on the latter, some songs are still really good, like "Renegade" and "Queen of Spades".

"Cornerstone" isn't as consistent, as it has the supremely awful song "Babe", which despite getting them a #1 hit was utter garbage. Some other songs are good on that one though, like "Boat on the River" and "Love in the Midnight" (mostly the Tommy Shaw stuff). I really liked "Paradise Theater", which is probably my favorite. By the time "Mr. Roboto" came out they were starting to parody themselves and I find their music unbearable from that point onward.

38. As long as we're talkin' the first two albums, OK...but they really fell apart
after that.
There was never ANYTHING in the later years that could live up to "He's a Whore" or "Mandocello" and if I EVER hear "I Want You To Want Me" again it'll be TOO FUCKIN' SOON!!!

Rick Nielsen is amazing and their early stuff was great and even a couple of the Elvis covers they did later on were cool but...the early stuff is the best.

40. "I Want You To Want Me" IS from the first two albums (number 2 to be exact)....
It's just that it didn't hit big as a single until the live recording on At Budokan in '79.

I love the Dream Police album.
