Fuck. I think he's a republican.
How the hell is that going to work? He says he doesn't ever want to talk politics but now I'm afraid that he actually admires the shrub.

Fancy that, he just called and we had a "discussion." Fuck, fuck, fuck. At least he's not a homophobe. That would be awkward. But people: he things Limbaugh is a moron, but Glenn Beck's heart is in the right place. He also thinks we can work this out.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

But beware, lest you think you can "fix" him. Some divides are too deep for lasting happiness.

Check his laughter: does he laugh a lot, and does he laugh at genuinely funny things? If you share a sense of humor, all things are possible.

The Drifters
Written by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Irv Nahan, and George Treadwell

Peaked at # 15 in 1959

(Dance with me, dance with me, dance with me, dance with me)

(Dance with me), oh-oh hold me closer, closer and closer
Much closer while the music plays, oh, my little darlin', won'tya
(Dance with me), oh-oh hold me tighter, tighter and tighter
Much tighter while the rhythm sways

Put your lips to mine while the rhythm sways
We're no longer strangers
Now we're more than friends so-o-o

(Dance with me), dance with me closer, closer and closer
And maybe we'll be lovers when the music ends

(Doot-doot) (Dance with me)
(Doot-doot) (Dance with me)
(Doot-doot) (Dance with me)
(Doot-doot) (Dance with me)

(Dance with me), dance with me closer, closer and closer
And maybe we'll be lovers when the music ends

(Doot-doot) (Dance with me)
(Doot-doot) (Dance with me)

I wouldn't be even mildly interested in him were he not incredibly down to earth, thoughtful (as in, he thinks) and kind not only to me but to everybody. He cares about people and not things, you know? So, maybe it wouldn't be too much work. He reads: I need to debunk some of his beliefs. Oh I dunno.

It's always hard when you get blindsided by an unexpected Republican. But honestly, even if he was a Democrat, you'd probably still have had to ditch him. When a man says he "doesn't ever want to talk politics" to a lady who's one of the belles of the most awesome political website out there...well, I'd say that'd probably an indication of some mismatched priorities. :(

Cat Stevens - The Wind Lyrics

I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think,
only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
But never, never never never
I never wanted water once
No, never, never, never

I listen to my words but
they fall far below
I let my music take me where
my heart wants to go
I swam upon the devil's lake
But never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake
No, never, never, never

You never can tell. Personally, I like to debate, and it's no fun to debate with someone who agrees with you on everything.

And there's different stripes of Republicans. I went out with a neo-Goldwater Repub. (socially moderate, fiscally conservative) for a while, and it was one of the better relationships I had. Until we both had to move for work, effectively ending it.

Would you believe my DH is a Repub? 'S true. Nine happy years (10 if you count from the handfasting ceremony a year and a day before the legal ceremony). Yeah, it can be a pain, and we are wont to argue politics vehemently until we both give up because neither one is about to flip to the other side, but we were Meant To Be, so we get around it, even with me a hardcore liberal pagan tree-huggin' spell-castin' conspiracy-theory-believin' moonbat. (No, he doesn't call me that! :) "Commie-lib" maybe, but in a loving way.)

It CAN happen--and you can teach him a lot along the way. Just go slowly and see what happens.

Having doubts a few days into the relationship is a bad sign. I say if it doesn't feel like you are swimming in a pool of flowers for a couple of months you should get the fuck out.

I've been interested in him from the first glimpse but was in no way fit for a relationship so I told him I wasn't ready. Then I saw him again two weeks ago and decided to take the plunge, so to speak.

You, lover of Walker, T.R., should understand perverse attraction! :P

You are a grown up, you know what is best for you. Do what you feel is right.

In the eyes of a ranger,
The unsuspecting stranger,
Had better know the truth of wrong from right,

'Cause the eyes of a ranger are upon you,
Any wrong you do, he's gonna see,

When you're in Texas, look behind you,

'Cause that's where the rangers gonna be.

58. he may not be a puke or claim to be one (they're all libertarian now...)
but if he likes Glenn Beck, that is a problem. I had a friend tell me he likes Beck and O'Reilly and it's made me seriously reconsider how smart the guy is. Seriously. I still consider him a friend, and he is known for bad decision making, but... sorry. Anyone who falls for that crap might not be reliable in the long run.

Don't run away yet, but give him some solid tests, like mentioning the Dixie Chicks and Clinton (if he chokes, walk away), global warming, etc. Don't make it an obvious test though - try just slipping things into conversation and see how he reacts. Keep in mind that I know lefties who don't care for Clinton or the Chicks, but if he gets all assed up, you know he's a conservobot.

Yes, in theory the guy is going to play down at the Dog (though the online schedule of performers disputes his claim) but I was never in fact going to go and try to catch his attention. that if one of us sings off-tune the other will make no negative comment but encourage the self-expression. He want to make a video with his two daughters wearing wigs and doing backup as he sings "I only have eyes for you." He leaves messages on my cellphone so when I wake up in the morning, there he is. He's sending me romantic songs by email and he never makes any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors when he writes to me. He has been a single parent for years and years, and described to me how to properly give an infant its late-night bottle though both his girls are now teenagers.

I've read this whole thread.

I think if he has been a single parent for what sounds like quite a few years, he may not have a lot of time to be politically involved, so maybe he just kind of follows issues at a surface level, and doesn't know how biased the major media is.

I would counsel ou to proceed cautiously, as you have been, rather than running away. You can always run once you know for certain you need to.

90. I've dated a republican.
A real republican, a conservative since birth republican, one of those awful people who think that Ronald Reagan is the greatest president of all time and Whitewater is a bigger scandal than Watergate.

It was interesting. We didn't work...but it had nothing to do with our politics. It had to with everything but. I hated her old-money ways, wastefulness, country-club-set family, the way she'd roll her eyes when I helped homeless people or volunteered at the soup kitchen, her inability to understand that I liked being a literacy activist, my inability to not refer to her senior partner at the corporate-law firm as "Ronald Shitbrains Raygun Hitler" (corporate counsel for the CT RSC...he golfed with her dad and got her the job as said firm...I think they'd slept together too, but I was trying to not imagine that.) in front of him. When we were good though, we were golden. One plus, the "physical chemistry" was awesome. This actually had to do with politics. I can't explain...it's lockbait. Taboo is hot though. That's the gist.

So...I'm going to go out on the limb here...and say it's not as big of a deal as you want to make it. If you want to give it a shot...you just have to set boundaries* and you have to talk to him and hash out what it is he believes. (To compare versus your "can't-accept" list.) Tell him you can tell when he's lying. All men think women can tell when we're lying. He won't be able to lie without being really obvious because he'll be trying to hide the fact he's lying.

* - Before you talk to him. i.e. what can you accept coming out of his mouth and what can't you. It's easier than it sounds. If the most beautiful woman alive (Rachel Weisz**) said "I think the USA Patriot Act is a great idea" or "Fetuses don't choose to be aborted." I'd be immediately repulsed. The things on this list...the very thought of hearing him say them should turn you off.

** - Not only hot, but to my recollection a vocal and unabashed liberal...thankfully.

94. I think you have some good points there Chan!
and since one of my newest dear friends is a Republican, but I don't care because when we're together we have a blast... I'd say that politics is just one part of a person usually. Now if the beliefs that guide their political bent are all pervasive, then that might be a problem.

The fact that he doesn't like Rush Limpballs is a positive.

The beach is taken one inch at a time!

and chemistry that can be incredible when there are opposite ideas, and the idea of crossing taboos is part of it. But you're right, that could easily become lockable stuff.

92. Doesn't have to be a deal breaker.
Think of it this way, there are hundreds of political issues and thousands of non-political issues out there.

If someone is agreeing with you on every single one, then either they are not thinking or just telling you what you want to hear. Those are the ones to avoid.

If someone disagrees with you on topics but has a good logical argument, then I can respect that. My wife and are polar opposites on some topics, but she can defend her viewpoint. I'd rather date an intelligent person with a few republican views than a liberal who falls in line with my every opinion mindlessly.

Does he think for himself? Does he have some good points? Can he defend his views without anger and does he listen to your points?

I had a similar thing happen to me recently.

Was on a 2nd date with a guy, who knew full well that I won't date Bushies.

He sheepishly admitted he was a Republican. But quickly added that though he voted for Bush twice, he greatly regrets it now.

I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, for the time being.

UNTIL

He said, "But you know who I really like? Condi Rice!"

I haven't seen him since. Life's too short.

if you disagree over smaller issues (for me this is things like trade, gun control etc...)those are issues I believe you can agree to disagree on and actually live happily ever after.
On larger issues (for me this is abortion, gay marriage, the war, separation of church and state, and environmental issues) if you disagree, RUN don't walk away. You cannot build a relationship if your core values don't match up.

I hope you are able to get it worked out.

120. Eight years ago, I would've given different advice ("oh, maybe he's not super
conservative, maybe you can change his mind...") but now, no way. Anybody hasn't completely distanced themselves from the word "Republican" is either drinking the Kool-Aid or really, desperately uninformed. Or both. Either way, that sends up a big red flag in my book.

Did he really say Glenn Beck's heart is in the right place? Good grief! That's like one of those strings of flags draped around used car dealerships, only all red.

122. If he ever shows up like he said he would
I will ask him to clarify. If he doesn't show up he won't get the chance to explain.

He was supposed to be here at 7:30. He just called and will be right over but I'm irritated. How are you?
