ADVICE NEEDED!!!
I live on a dirt road in NH. It's a very well maintained road with enough room for two cars to pass. I ordered a table and 4 chairs for my deck. The company that is supposed to deliver the furniture is Roadway. I was supposed to get the stuff today but instead got a voice message from the driver saying that he had the biggest trailor truck that there was and didn't think he could deliver because of the road. He said that maybe I could get a truck and meet him in Keene! I'm waiting for a call back from these people and I'm trying to figure out what to say. My instinct is to tell them that if their truck is too big, they should find a smaller truck...my stuff would fit into a small U-Haul or something like that. I don't have a truck and I don't think it's up to me to solve their problem. Is it fair to say to them that I've paid for delivery and they have to find a way to deliver? By the way, there are lots of other people on this road and I've never heard of a truck that couldn't get up here.

You guys always come up with good advice! :-)

1. You bought the table and chairs.

It's THEIR responsibility to deliver them. If you're paying delivery charges, then it's THEIR responsibility to get the items YOU ordered to your place.

3. They probably had to make several deliveries to the area
And needed the large truck to do it.

I would contact them and ask them what kind of a discount on the trucking they're going to offer since they're not going to deliver all the way.

ps - I'm originally from Brattleboro. :hi:

6. Hi neighbor!
I think that's where the Roadway warehouse is. You'd think they's be used to these country roads!

4. is it a delivery van or a tractor trailer
most 18 wheelers aren't allowed to ride on certain roads.

plus the guy is just a company driver. he probably doesn't have the authority to rent UHaul trucks to conduct business for the company. insurance liability and all.

if it is a small delivery truck and they won't do it (but i think roadway is long haul/LTL/intermodal carrier with big trucks) i would whoop their ass and tell them to grow up and put the hammer down on that dirt road

8. The guy said he had a tractor trailer. I think they make
tons of deliveries in this area and probably use the big trucks.

5. I echo what the others have already said.
You paid for delivery, Roadway (the company that was contracted by the furniture store) needs to find a way to get your stuff to you, or the furniture store needs to find another trucking company.

7. Check and see if the delivery says 'curbside delivery'
if it does and your driveway is actually the road, they aren't obligated to bring it any further than that junction.

(Found this out the very hard way)

I would call Roadway and ask them to find a smaller truck and be willing to pay an additional fee for 'backyard delivery'.

Hard to believe that they make such a ridiculous distinction but when dealing with heavy stuff, it makes all the difference to have it brought to where you want it.

Good luck.

9. I deal with this crap alot!
I live in a remote area in WV for part of the year and there are eight miles of dirt road leading to my house. Am assuming you still have a copy of your order/payment showing shipping charges that you paid. Use that when you call the company you originally ordered from. If you get a recording and prompts, just keep hitting "0" - will eventually get you to a real live person - hopefully! It is the company that you originally ordered from to make this right for you.

10. bottom line - you paid for delivery
its up to them to figure out how to deliver it.

Its not like you have a very strange or unforseeable difficulty here, its just a dirt road. If you had a winding hill of a driveway or very narrow road, they might have a case, but this is not unreasonable.

11. YOU GUYS ARE MAGICAL!
And this Roadway company is pretty decent. I took your advice, talked to the company and they are going to send a smaller truck tomorrow. Thank you!

13. I run into this problem all the time where I live
Edited on Tue Apr-24-07 02:38 PM by NV Whino
I frequently have to receive deliveries for clients who order LARGE items that can only be shipped by large commercial carriers. Here's what I have learned.

1. The carriers only make money when they can fill the largest truck possible for a particular area.
2. It does no good what so ever to request a small truck. They don't have small trucks.
3. If you want your delivery, beg, borrow or rent a smaller truck and offload.
4. The carrier doesn't care if you get your delivery.
5. They are not the people from which you purchased the items.
6. They get paid anyway.

Just read your last post. Congratulations on getting a smaller truck. Doesn't happen out here.
