Y'know, if Certain Other People had posted the 'ill-conceived gag'
it would've gotten lots of laughs because, oh, it's just the Cool Kids cutting up again.

Those who didn't laugh would've been admonished to "get over it."

The Lounge imitates life, huh?

6. Ya Know
the main problem I HAD (and no I no longer have it) was that I thought BNL was being strafed in an open thread. Then after feeling bad and wanting to support her, I found out it was a "joke".

The rest of it was fine, it was a great punk, I guess even with BNL it was a great punk, but I also have a right to get pissed off when someone yanks my chain.

Don't ya think?

Oh, and I'm not even a "cool kid" and I got upset.

But it's all good, and I think it is fucking funny now, ya know, like whatever?

I just might be on my way to Barnes and Noble to pick up paperwork for a quickie divorce from my husband so I can move in with some guy I met on the internet...

you know, I'm so completely "rational" that way.

And, yes, I'm sure anyone can automatically assume that I would, out of the blue, publicly treat someone as kind as BNL so terribly like that. Truly. It's just my nature, you know.

even here. Ditto on the treatment of BNL-- she wouldn't be the first kind person treated so badly in the lounge. As obviously off the wall as the gag seemed to you, my reaction was "OH SHIT! I HOPE THIS ISN'T THE START OF ANOTHER GREAT LOUNGE DRAMA." I did what I usually do, which is stay out of it until the dust settles.

I'm glad that some people enjoyed the gag and that you cleared up any lingering doubt that it was one.

Really. Are we going to start the Lounge is a popularity contest again? I wasn't here. I read the thread and only thought it was in poor taste because I would never do that to my husband. Writer clarified. It's an opinion board. No, my life is not junior high anymore OR, so I can't agree. I was over that 20 years ago.

28. Oh sure... here are the many things I now know people would assume about me:
a) That I would just dump my husband of six years for some guy I met online.

b) That I would be cruel to another female poster online, truly cruel, and mean it.

c) That I would make a joke at the expense of the subjects involved, ESPECIALLY my husband.

Or that... it might be a gag I'm pulling with my friends. That we were all just trying to have a little fun with it. That we're all laughing about it this morning. That I'm going out for a nice meal tonight with my husband and friends for my birthday while GoPsUx celebrates his. That next week I'm working on shopping some fiction pieces of mine. That I have a life offline, including the many who know me.

33. It's not entirely assumption...

Other than the people that really know you here, no one knows what your relationship w/ your husband is like. Add that to the fact that you have made posts in the past alluding to your unhappiness or discontent in your "real life." Many things get lost in translation on the internets, and things aren't always received in the way they are intended because the many nuances that accompany a face to face conversation (eye contact, body language, tone of voice) just aren't there.

I suspect that for many others, like myself, the distaste came into play with the TONE of the posts. Everything started out okay, but then turned mean. It really wasn't obvious to anyone that didn't know any better that it was an all-inclusive joke amongst a group of buddies.

I harbor no ill-will or judgments against you at all - I just wanted to make an attempt to explain why what seems so OBVIOUS to you may have been lost on others.

That said ... if it hadn't been for the way it evolved into a major misunderstanding ... brilliant! Brilliantly conceived, just lacking a bit in the execution. ;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you, by the way! :D

49. The thing is Writer
Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 01:20 PM by Southpawkicker
people don't know you other than the fact that you and GoPsUx are friends, you had an appreciation thread, you'd said you might decide to leave DU, you are mysterious maybe

Knowing a little about you I thought it was a joke at first, but the thing with BNL was played too well I guess, it triggered a reaction that I thought geez, she can't be doing this, it was surreal for sure, but not totally unbelievable.

All those things you said are things that most people have seen happen either in real life or even here- lots of people dump their husband for someone they just met; oh, and I've never seen women be cruel to each other; and the factor of your husband would not be known to most people would it.

You wrote an apology thread so I assumed you were actually sorry that you'd done this, now you seem to be backtracking and saying that we all should have known better.

Obviously we didn't. I didn't, even though I sensed it wasn't right. It didn't take long to figure out I'd been punked, and the fact that it had gotten me feeling protective of a friend meant it also took a bit to cool down.

So let me say these things: a) you pulled a good punk; b) every action has an opposite and equal reaction; so did you expect everyone to know immediately it was a joke? I suspect you hoped it would fool some people. Now as Truman said: "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen" would be the only advice I can give. In other words, if you post something trying to punk everyone, don't be surprised if some people get punked!

I say these things I hope in the kindest way possible, because I do not hold something against you and I think in retrospect it is quite funny. It's easy for people who weren't here to come along and go, oh, wow, how could people be so stupid? Guess what, sometimes we (people) never fail to believe the worst when it is put to us in the right way.

I know how people are... it's just shocking to me what we each assume of the other, especially when there's no true interaction with the other.

It is, in a nutshell, another example of why 'net relationships are tenuous and unpredictable.

For whatever is said in the lounge there will be someone, or many someones, here willing to assume it's true, despite having little or *no* knowledge of what the truth is. The only way to deal with it is sit back and let that tendency to believe bullshit show you who you do and don't want to be associated with around here. Use it to your advantage when it happens, because in truth it is a gift, and be grateful.

27. Writer isn't one of the cool kids?
It might have been more obviously a gag, if it came from others. Writer's thread was fairly detailed. I couldn't tell if she was joking and didn't second guess her. When she pulled in BNL, I suspected drama rather than humor.

I do think it was just a joke. There are no bad feelings to get over, as far as I'm concerned. However, I do understand why people were confused and think many of the comments were fairly based on that.

None of us are popular when we want to do that. Yes, some people thought it was in poor taste. Some thought it was funny. There you have it. Of course, I don't know what interpersonal relationships go on behind the scenes, so I could be completely wrong. It just seems most of us graduated from junior high years ago. :hi:

At first I was a bit put off because I thought that maybe something did happen and I had no clue (as usual)-especially since I do talk to one of those involved outside of the boards!

I'm sure I looked quite stupid tracking others down on yahoo, asking them what was up.

If it hadn't been someone whom I occasionally converse with in a friendly manner I wouldn't have cared all that much. (One of those deals where a friend tells a friend something that is going on-thought someone forgot to tell me!)
