1. Tim Burton
His remake sucked. Really bad. The original and "Beneath" are my two favorites, then the franchise just got silly.

6. Escape
I love the first two for their straight approach, though "Beneath" had a few moments as well that just didn't work (like the 'peace demonstration' bit.)

"Escape" was a nice switcharound, with a few comedic moments but had a few straight moments as well. And the ending was very sad indeed. Indeed, Kim Hunter's (Zira) first words spoken to the humans is that she loathes bananas. It was while filming the original film that she grew a dislike for bananas...

The final two were merely played out to make more money. Which is odd. The first one cost nearly $6 mil to make but brought in $26 mil. (they also cut the budget for "Beneath" by 50% and it shows in some scenes...)

And you could also tell, for the first and "Escape", that Jerry Goldsmith was in his prime. When he's good he's great. (his later Trek works weren't always as good, "Nemesis" particularly... :-( )

2. I just love that Roddy McDowell!
And Chuck H. was great in the first one. He was a liberal back then. You could really see it in the movies he chose. When I was in 4th grade we built the whole ape city out of clay (that was about the same time the series came out) I couldn't bring myself to see Burton's version.

3. I voted
for the first one. It was the only good one in my humble opinion. I've seen them all but none had the impact of the first.

4. Bedtime for Bonzo
So, flame me for picking one with Ronnie. The others all have Heston.

5. It's playing tuesday night.
Only to really enjoy it, you have to turn the sound off, get really wasted, scream and made obscene gestures at the screen. (Well it does star a chimp, and it is completely scripted.)

7. I have affection for Conquest, because
I saw it on the big screen when I was 13. (Revolutionary apes - Cool!) But the first is the only one any merit. Especially effective is the pervading quiet of the first half hour or so. Nicely establishes a sense of uncanniness. And because of that, the first sight of the mounted ape in the tall grass is still startling.

10. Burton and Marky-Mark stunk that one up.....
Love the Apes movies, but the "re-imagining" by Tim Burton was a steaming pile of crap from a usually good filmmaker.
