Name at least one obscure TV show
That you think no one has ever heard of. See how many people actually DO remember the show, and how many actually saw it!

You can check at IMDB to confirm your selection, but it won't be much fun if people go there to cheat, now is it?

My entry (this time around) is a short-lived series called "The Wizard." Starring small person David Rappaport (from Time Bandits fame) and Douglas Barr (from The Fall Guy), Rappaport played an inventor of toys, as well as some more serious things for the government and for the handicapped. It was broadcast in 1986-1987.

49. It was essentially a 1958 precursor to 'Emergency'
The half hour B&W program may have been corny by today's standards, but it was pretty exciting for me when I was a little tyke.

The show's theme went, "Primrose Lane... just a family on Primrose Lane..."

Fonda played a cop.

5. 'Bay City Blues'
Steven Bochco ("Hill Street Blues") vehicle. Four episodes aired, all in an experimental late-night slot in 1983.

It was about a minor-league ball club. Starred Michael Nouri as the manager and Dennis Franz (pre-HSB) as the pitching coach... and Sharon Stone as a player's wife.

168. Whoopi was in it, as well as Jean Stapleton from All in the Family.
The guy who played Nash Bridges father was also a co-star. The series lasted about a half-season.

The Outcast was a late 1960's western that starred Otis Young as a freed slave, post civil war, who went out west, but was never accepted into society. He turned gunfighter. That show only lasted about a half-season.

18. Time Tunnel
Main stars were James Darren as Tony Newman and Robert Colbert as Doug Phillips. Also present were Whit Bissell as the general in charge of the project and Lee Meriwether as one of the technicians. The pilot episode had them on the Titanic, trying to convince the ship's captain that they were in for a lot of trouble, but of course, no one believed them. The time team was able to pull them out before they sank with the ship. It was sort of like a pre-Quantum Leap show, mid-60s, and was an Irwin Allen production.

Speaking of which, a piece of trivia: When Gene Roddenberry brought Star Trek to the networks the first go-around, the network bought another show instead because it sounded more high concept: it was Irwin Allen's Lost in Space.

The Magician--a lot of it was filmed at the actual Magic Castle in Hollywood, a private club for real magicians and their guests. The series did manage to make two seasons, IIRC. I remember it very well.

PS: No, I didn't cheat. But I've always been a fan of almost anything SF oriented on TV, though I hated Lost in Space, and I didn't particularly care for Land of the Giants, either, another Irwin Allen show.

is when they landed in Honolulu on Dec. 6, 1941. What I remember about it is Tony had lived there at the time because his dad was stationed there — and Older Tony met Young Tony, which kind of did a number on my head.

I still can't figure how one could go back in time and meet oneself without the universe exploding or something.

dark hallway. One of us would make up the story and stand at the end of the "tunnel". The other would come down the tunnel, twisting and turning, ending at the "episode". It was so much fun we played it whenever we got together! It is my fondest childhood pretending memory. (Sadly, my bfa died last September at age 48... )

250. You know
after all these years, I forget. I do remember an episode, though, where they actually ended up back at Project Tick-Tock in the future, by about 5 years, I think. There was a saboteur running around and they had to identify him. In their "real time," they knew once Tony and Doug IDed the saboteur, they could arrest him before he messed around, which of course would change the future.

is that my brother and I fought endlessly over Combat and another show in the same time period: Daktari. I had this huge crush on Marshall Thompson on Daktari, and my mother mollified both of us by alternating programs to accommodate us both.

The Gallant Men I'm not familiar with at all, but another WWII series which I did enjoy on a regular basis was 12 O'Clock High. Again, I had a crush on Paul Burke.

It was before Hans Gudegast changed his name to Eric Braeden and went into a soap opera role for at least 30 years as Victor Newman on Young & the Restless.

It also starred Christopher George, who went on to a 1 season series, The Immortal, which was more like The Fugitive than Highlander.

240. I remember the T-50 from the show...
Sky had to hike uphill on the wing to enter the cockpit because it was a tail dragger.

My late drinking buddy was a commercial pilot and he could spin tall yarns when he was in his cups, but I have to believe him on this one as he volunteered it out of the blue, plus I refuse to speak ill of the dead. De mortuis nil nisi bonum.

He said he flew with Paul Mantz when they filmed a ton of stock footage for the show. He told me he was flying a second plane, an AT-17 bobcat that was military surplus, and the plane was granted a one day FAA license. It later got cut up for studio/set shots.

34. Funny, I've been thinking of that one
for a long while now. There were at least two, possibly three episodes which were never broadcast--I've been hoping against hope that someday they will put them on DVDs. Nigel Terry also played King Arthur in Excalibur, and Ione Skye, the daughter, was Donovan Leach's daughter (I probably spelled that wrong)

In addition, Cherye Lunghi, played Peter Strauss's ex-wife in a series later down the pike called Moloney, about a psychiatrist who is also a cop. (Yes, I likely spelled her name wrong, too!)

262. Actually,
the whole concept behind CSI can be directly traced to Quincy, M.E. back in the mid 70s. Jack Klugman used to get royally pissed off and made quite a scene because he would go into the colleges around L.A. and try to get some of them to write episodes. He considered the stuff the "real" writers were giving him was pure shit, and he made sure everyone knew his opinion on the subject.

Quincy was one of the first times forensic science was used, and used in effective ways. Consider that it was 30 years ago, and a lot of the science of forensics barely scratched the surface of what we know now. Amazing how far we have progressed, and we can all thank Jack Klugman a wee bit! :)

it is no wonder that I now love CSI as well...most of the time. I also like the court tv forensics shows too, and stuff like "Dr. G. medical examiner". I thought for a while I might like to do that kind of thing, be a CSI, but there were some dead mice around here a few weeks ago and I know now that there is no way I can handle the smell of that day in and day out, I don't know how those folks do it.

I've enjoyed that for awhile--was disappointed it was cancelled. We've been trying to figure out, right from the start, if Ted Atherton is the son of William Atherton. They look SO much alike! But I've searched the web over and over and have never found out one way or the other.

And Yannick Bisson was just so cuddly cute! Because of where it was broadcast (PAX), it had a conservative leaning, but I ignored that detail and just watched it for the eye candy!

I love curly haired men especially blonde. Daltrey, Peter Frampton. I guess that's why I hate the current short hair and especially the baldies! Not when men already are balding and shave their heads but the 19 year olds. They will regret it when they prematurely bald!

It's funny though Katt has no muscles like most super heroes of the era. Today he''d be pumped up.

279. Trivia:
The first season, Katt's character was named Ralph Hinckley, but then Lennon got killed, and they renamed the character Ralph Hanley. Michael Pare was one of the students--he went on to some movies, and if I recall, The Philadelphia Experiment was one of them. Faye Grant (another student) went on to be the female lead on both the films and TV series of V.

478. It was great, until it became just another soap opera
Pissed me off when it did that. I thought it could have been a great historical perspective on that particular decade -- birth of women's rights, racial equality...instead, it became focused on whether or not two characters would get married. It deserved to be canned when that happened.

"He and She" with his wife Paula Prentiss. I think Jack Cassidy also had a role in it. It was one of those shows the critics loved but the audeinces didn't.

Anyone remember "Pete and Gladys"?

How about "The New People"? It was kind of a hippie "Gilligan's Island" about college aged kids surving a plane crash on a deserted tropical island. It was on for 45 minutes along with another show called "Music Scene" which was a music variety show featuring the hits of the day. David Steinberg was the host. Unfortunatetly, it was up against LAUGH-IN so those shows only lated half a season.

"It's About Time" aired sometime in the 60s and had this catchy jingle that went "It's about time, it's about space, it's about dum de dum de dum." Can't quite remember those last few words to the jingle. The show involved astronauts and cavemen if I remember correctly.

That year I was a kid, but old enough to watch and understand TV. Every week I was in the nursery at a bowling alley when It's About Time was on. The other kids were younger and played with blocks and toys. The young girl who was supervising the nursery would watch the TV show with me. Then I'd be singing the theme song when my parents finished bowling and came to pick me up.

As I recall, it was about two astronauts who return to earth after a mission, only to discover they've returned to prehistoric earth.

One of the cavemen was named Klong. Don't know why I remember that.

I too remember the first part of the theme song, but only the first line. Sorta like most Christmas carols.

I recall a program that was on a few years ago that my sister and I referred to as "Ghost Hospital" but I believe that it was called "All Souls." Very short lived summer programming.

I really enjoyed the Fox program "The Outsiders" from 1990. It was a spin off from the movie.

I really enjoyed Friday the 13th TV show (not to be confused with the films) from the late 80's.

Cleavon Little was the only cast member to appear on both seasons of it. The first year it was called "Temperatures Rising" and it was really funny. The second year it was called "The New Temperatures Rising Show" and it fell flat on its face. I don't know what happened with that show, someone must have sabotaged it. Or it was a case of "too many cooks" as the show had many writers and many directors. The only regular cast member for both years was Cleavon Little. The cast also included, at various times, Paul Lynde, Bernie Kopell, Jack Albertson, Larry Storch, James Whitmore, Alice Ghostley, Joan Van Ark and many others.

174. Yep - John Banner from "Hogan's Heroes"! Interesting fact
about him - I had no idea he was Jewish! Born and raised in Austria, he actually spent some time in concentration camps (where most of his family had been killed) and later felt uncomfortable playing Nazi characters in movie roles. The Schultz role, being a bumbling oaf in a goofball comedy, was something he enjoyed much more, apparently.

111. 2 shows: United States and Stutz Bearcat
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 09:18 AM by EstimatedProphet
United States was a show about a couple facing problems, starring Beau Bridges and Helen Shaver. It was billed as "What MASH did for war, United States does for marriage." I watched it as a kid, and the humor was way over my head.

Stutz Bearcat was a forerunner to The A-Team, about a couple of Federal agents in the 30's that travelled around the country in a Stutz Bearcat, and who would convert it into some sort of bizarre weapon for some reason every episode. I remember one very clearly where they turned it into a grenade launcher. It was my favoreit show for a time - that time when I was in 3rd grade.

Om edit: the name of the show was actually Bearcats! Thank you wikipedia.

show in which I fell in love with the main actor and have been in love with him for 36 years!

Rod Taylor was Hank Brackett, and the owner of the Stutz Bearcat. His partner was Johnny Reach, played by Dennis Cole. Their payment for a job was a blank check. The car enabled them to go much further than most on horseback.

The pilot for the show is on DVD and VHS, entitled Powderkeg. Fernando Lamas played the bad guy in it.

I don't recall United States, but I do remember Harts of the West, where Beau Brudges and Harley Jane Kozak played parents moving from the city to a ranch--sort of like an updated Green Acres.

I never actually saw the former, but it had a great theme song.

The latter was a sitcom with Monty Markham playing 2 characters - one the grandfather of the other who had been lost prospecting in Alaska, but was frozen and revived.

Both shows apparently had a lot of pre-season marketing hype, but flopped.

189. One of my favorite cartoons when I was a kid!
Let's see if my memory serves me here. There was Bobby the barbarian, Sheila the rogue, Hank the archer, Merlin the magician (whose spells never seemed to really work, and when they did, it was purely coincidental), an acrobat (I can't remember her name), and I think the other one was Eric. And of course the Dungeon Master who would show up and disappear unexpectedly to speak to the kids in riddles and give them guidance. And there was their nemesis, a multi-headed dragon...Tiamat or something...

Later, as an adult, when I discovered the D&D game, I never put two and two together that the cartoon was based on the game. I didn't figure that out until someone told me recently. Go figure.

206. I watched the cartoon to support D&D
I think I was 16 or 17 when it came out... I actually just watched on old episode of it a week or two back: some german WW2 pilot crash landed in the D&D world. Venger had planned to use him to go back to earth with a space-age plane to turn the tide of the war in favor of the Nazis. That way, those meddling kids couldn't disrupt his plans because they'd never get born. But, the nazi guy was befriended by the kids and decided not to change history at the last moment, foiling Venger's plans. I think he & the black girl (Diana?) had unrequited crushes on each other, but it was left unsaid in the innocent cartoon world.

177. Tales of the Gold Monkey
1982-83 - one of two "Raiders of the Lost Ark" influenced series of that season (the other, not nearly as good IMO, was "Bring 'Em Back Alive"). Starred Stephen Collins as a 1940's South Seas pilot.

And another bit of trivia - the 90's cartoon "Tale Spin" basically took the Disney Jungle Book characters and put them into a "Tales of the Gold Monkey" setting - thus combining two of my favorite concepts. Ironically the combination didn't totally work for me, as I prefer the two realms separately, but it was interesting none the less.

178. Oh, and:
"Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future" - 1987-88. This was the first series to make extensive use of computer animation and interactive technology. Kids could buy the toys and actually shoot at and be shot at by the screen. Sadly the "gee whiz" kiddie appeal only went so far, and the actual stories and character interactions were very much on an adult sci-fi level, so the show missed its true target audience by a light year.

I'm guessing at the lyrics for the theme song:

First to fight for right for the homes they made

Simple grass routines without stress or strife

Lincoln Vale of the Everglades

The man who patrols in the Everglades

That's the best I can do after like 45 years and I was 5.

Wow, I'd forgotten all about that until you brought it up. That was a cool show.

There was another Nickelodeon series that was either British or Australian. It was called "The Third Eye." Ever catch that?

It had four different miniseries, one with aliens that looked like big sea worms. Another with a town populated by a cult that worshiped some beam that could turn people into stone. And another was about a group of kids that meet a dying wizard in a cave and then try and save him by venturing into different worlds in a labyrinth in the hopes of finding some crystal with magical powers. And the final one was about a girl that communicates with the ghost of a man executed for witchcraft.

Anyways, I've wondered if I'm the only one in the world that remembers that series, because it was pretty cool, at least to an eight year old.

220. Game show I was on called "Split Second." It was
on in the early 70's, hosted by Tom Kennedy. Three contestants answered trivia questions for 15 minutes. Then the "lightning round" at the end determined who would have the opportunity to try and start (and win) one of 5 cars. If the car he/she chose didn't start, the contestant returned the next day to try again for a chance to pick one out of four cars. After five wins without a car starting, the contestant was "retired" with the car of their choice.

"lightning round" (I needed 5 answers to win, whereas my opponents only needed 3 and 4 respectively because they won more money in the initial round), I came from behind and won the game! Then, even more luck...the Pontiac firebird I chose started. So I ended up with the car and $500.00.

The car was a base model. The dealer tried to talk me into all kinds of extras, but I was an impoverished college student and was only too happy to take whatever they were giving me. It was a V8 gas hog, so I traded it in for a Honda wagon less than two years later.

Only wish VCRs for home use had been in existence back then. All I have is an audio tape and some pictures I took off the tv. My old reel-to-reel tape player died long ago, so really all I have at this point is the memory.

"The Hathaways" appeared for one season on ABC-TV beginning in 1961. The show was about a real estate agent, Walter Hathaway, and his wife, Elinore (Peggy Cass), who adopt a family of performing chimps. The animated opening featured the Chimps and the principal stars, and was probably done by Hanna-Barbera.

Although you got me thinking about chimps and TV. I vaguely remember watching another odd TV program involving a cast of chimps dressed in clothes with a superimposed dialog storyline from the late fifties or early sixties. It might have been an older movie that got chopped up a la Three Stooges two reelers, and shown in fifteen minute segments. Independent TV, low budget, no song. The Male chimp may have been named Chatter. Do you remember seeing anything like that, or am I just dreaming it?

this thing.

The backstory is, my aunt used to tease my cousin Julie by singing the theme song and putting Julie's name where the chimp's name went. And to some effect. lol

This was a sitcom, maybe lasted a coupla years but as I was only 6 or 7 at the time, I don't remember much.

487.  Or Bill Cosby in "I Spy" back in 1965
A pair of American agents face espionage adventures with skill, humor and some serious questions about their work. Robinson's (Robert Culp) cover is as a former Princeton law student and Davis Cup tennis player; Rhodes scholar Scott (Cosby) is his trainer as well as being a language expert.

The first American dramatic TV series to feature a black actor in a lead role. Scripts were peppered with unique lingo. One catchphrase, "wonderfulness," became popular and was later used by Bill Cosby for the title of one of his comedy albums.

Kelly Robinson and Alexander Scott travel around the world in their profession as agents for the United States government. Their business is serious with no fancy gadgets or flashy villains; Kelly and Scotty are more apt to battle industrial spies and Cold War agents than megalomaniacal would-be world dominators. As their cover, Robinson travels the professional tennis circuit with Scott as his trainer.

Pretty heady stuff for 1965.

She was a performance artist in NYC. I did some shows on the same bill as her.

One time I was in the audience and she took off her panties and tossed them at me. Then she introduced the guy who was going to be her date after the show. As he walked back to his seat I gave him the panties, telling him they were a preview of later. Margaret was upset later when he broke the date. Apparently the panties were a little, um, ripe.

Starred David Naughton ("An American Werewolf in London" & Dr. Pepper commercial)

c.1979, ABC

Makin' it. Ooh-ooh-ooh. Makin' it.

I'm solid gold. I've got the goods
They stand when I walk through the neighborhoods

I'm makin' it. I've got the chance.
I'm takin' it. No more, no more fakin' it
This time in life I'm makin' it (oh-oh-oh) Makin' it.

Hello uptown. Goodbye poverty.
The top of the ladder is waiting for me
I'm makin' it. I've got the chance.
I'm takin' it. No more, no more fakin' it
This time in life I'm makin' it (oh-oh-oh) Makin' it.

Listen everyone here this coming year's gonna be my year
I'm as bad as they come, number two to no one.
I've got looks, I've got brains and I'm breakin' these chains.
Make some room now dig what you see
Success is mine, I've got the key. I'm makin' it.

329. Korla Pandit Adventures in Music
A truly bizarre musical program my grandmother used to watch on her TV in the fifties (she was the only member of my family who owed a TV). He was an exotic looking man with bedroom eyes, who wore an enormous turban with a jewel in in. My grandmother was madly in love with him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQHaglomI

He never spoke, just gazed soulfully at the audience while playing a number of musical instruments. According to his official biography:

Actually, the truth was even stranger than that! Google his name if you want to read a life story that belongs in a novel. My grandmother was lucky to have died before the advent of the Internets, 'cause if she knew the truth, it would have killed her.

The precursor to Reality TV. They'd get these women with horrible afflictions - blind, cancer patients, total body casts, advanced bone disease, what have you and they'd compete to see whose sob story got the loudest round of applause. "Suzy Smith has incurable leprosy, and she needs a wheelchair for her husband Roy, so he can pick up the medication for little Timmy (who has cystic fibrosis) at the drug-store..."

Ghastly, ghastly show: a parade of the afflicted offered up as entertainment. If they ever revive it, it's a sure bet Fox will want the rights.

It was an action show about a scuba diver fighting bad guys. Early 60's. I was very young, but still remember. That's good, because I can't even remember last Saturday night! Oh, the demon rum!

I think it may have been a send-up of The Renegade.

424. OMG!
I hadn't thought of that show in years! Joby Baker and Ronnie Schell as morning DJs. I think Baker's name was Dave, because I remember station manager Billy DeWolfe (dog, what a great old comedic actor) in one episode saying, "David is in jail!"

I think Baker's character was married, while Schell was something of a dawg, and a bit of a fuck-up in general. Didn't the opening have him rushing into the booth like two seconds before the show started?

One could even say it was a precursor to WKRP — though not much of it, as I recall, actually took place in the station.

OH — they had those whistles that go "fwwwEEEEEEEEeeeee." :D

I'd also forgotten how gorgeous Converse was back then. I liked this part from the blurb accompanying the video: "CBS supposedly thought the show would be above the heads of viewers and put it on the shelf for two years."

It sure wasn't over my head, plus it was filmed in NYC, where I grew up.

421. A couple of quickies
Switch and Search.

Switch was Robert Wagner and Eddie Albert, 1971. Also in the show was a young Sharon Gless and Charlie Callas. It was riding the wave of "con games" after The Sting won so big.

Search was slightly earlier. It was sort of like one of the revolving shows, with Hugh O'Brien, Tony Franciosa and Doug McClure playing agents of an organization at which Burgess Meredith was the head. They had remarkable high tech gear that would still be envied.

Also, I'm sure everyone remembers The Name of the Game, with revolving characters who were the publishers of magazines? Gene Barry owned the publication firm, while Robert Stack ran the "crime" magazine and Tony Franciosa ran the version of "People" magazine. Young assistants included Ben Murphy and Susan St. James.

455. The Outcasts
was a short-lived Western television series, appearing on ABC in the 1968-69 season. The series co-starred Don Murray and Otis Young, and is probably most notable for being the first television Western with an African-American co-star. The series tells the story of white bounty hunter Earl Corey (Murray) who teams up with newly released slave Jemal David (Young) in the 1860s.

456. Here are two more:
Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp

an American television show on ABC from September 12 1970 to September 2 1972 featuring a cast of chimpanzees overdubbed with human voices. The plot featured Lancelot Link and his female colleague Mata Hairi in secret agent and spy satires. Link worked for APE (Agency to Prevent Evil), engaged in a long conflict with the evil organization CHUMP (Criminal Headquarters for Underworld Master Plan). CHUMP's monocled chief, Baron von Butcher, inevitably hatched the latest plan to endanger the world. The Baron's network of international fiends included his chauffeur Creto, mad scientist Dr. Strangemind (with an exaggerated Bela Lugosi dialect), the Dragon Woman, drowsy Wang Fu, singing sheik Ali Assa Seen and the cultured Duchess. A regular weekly feature was chimp TV host "Ed Simian" introducing a musical number an all-chimp band, "The Evolution Revolution."

Then Came Bronson:

ran in the US for one season, on NBC, from 1969 to 1970. The series featured Michael Parks as Jim Bronson, a newspaperman who becomes disillusioned after the suicide of his best friend Nick (Martin Sheen) and, after a heated argument with his editor. Bronson becomes a nomadic vagabond searching for the meaning of life and experience what life has to offer. During his travels he shares his values with the people he meets along the way and lends a helping hand when he can. Bronson rides a Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle. The premise of each episode was that Bronson entered someone else's life at a crucial point and acted as a catalyst for change. Bronson was committed to pacifism and often deflected a competitor's anger into self-examination. Always, like a true catalyst, he rolled out of every episode unchanged. The show sometimes faced the perception that it was a knock-off of the movie Easy Rider, but in actuality it preceded the release of that movie. Scenes were mostly shot outdoors, which made for spectacular views, and Michael Parks employed the low-key "James Dean" method of acting. Some shows were funny, some sad, some serious.

Canada's answer to Quincy; you can see it on WGN and perhaps on your local stations (DC's ABC affiliate runs it once a week on weekends, late Sunday night or Monday morning).

My local UPN also runs a Canadian show called Cold Squad, which we ripped off and turned into Cold Case.

Have any of you seen either of these shows? Good stuff if you like crime drama and can do without the glitz and flash of American shows.

492. Remember WENN
It was on AMC some years ago. It ended horribly too. There was a cliffhanger that was never resolved.

That was aired when AMC didn't have commercials. Now not only are there commerrcials but they broadcast dreck.

498. Beverly Hills Teens & Newsweasels
Beverly Hills Teens: A cartoon about teens in Beverly Hills. It qwaas your baasic kid cartoon ashoqw qwith a lot of ashopping.

Newsweasels: It was a sketch comedy show on E! that lasted only about 3 episodes. IIRC, the premise was two guys watching satellite TV and each sketch was a channel they landed on as they surfed

One of the sketches was a mock toy commercial called "Mutrons". They were toy green army men that had been modified.

The show was funny, but apparently my brand of humor didn't fly (well at least at the time).

511. Fernwood 2Night and America 2night
Martin Mull and Fred WIllard make a classic comedy couple.

Fernwood 2night was of course a spinoff of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. I watched that with my parents and Ma and I both drooled over the guy who played Dennis, Bruce Solomon.

Early 1950's -- Alan Mowbray as an elegant con-man with his less-than-elegant assistant, Garvey. They always helped out people who had just been fleeced by going after the bad fleecers.
