Spelling Bee turmoil update...

Again, I want to thank everyone for their comments this weekend. It has made me feel a lot better about it. I contacted Bee officials at the local level and while they agreed with me wholeheartedly and cannot believe that the principal won't admit the mistake, there is nothing they can do...What the heck is that???

So I sent another email (really trying to be polite) to the principal including the local bee sponsor remarks and am trying to guilt her into making this all good. I am also waiting for the National Bee to get back with us.

I did mention to the local bee sponsor, that given this situation, perhaps they may want to take another look at how they run things; my daughter right now has a bad taste in her mouth about the whole thing, and this certainly won't help their subscription numbers as far as the Grumpy family is concerned.

Please send positive vibes that at least she gets another chance.

1. You should seriously raise hell if they don't allow her a second chance

It wasn't fair at all to your daughter, so they can't do the "isn't fair to the other guy" bs.. go to the principal in person and raise hell.. if that doesn't work go to her boss

2. I think it is great

what you are doing. There are important lessons here, that whatever the final outcome, are best learned first hand. One: sometimes folks who are in power refuse to admit they are wrong, even in the face of strong evidence to the contrary. Two: When you know you are right, fight! Even if you don't win, you have given it your best, and probably made some folks on the other side stop and think.:yourock:

3. they need to be fair

it sends a bad message to kids otherwise. I can't believe that they didn't clarify which word it was. That is anathema in a spelling bee from what I remember from my spelling bee days. Good luck.

but I have gone back and read the posts now. This is outrageous, and I have confidence that the National Bee will overturn the disqualification. Cripe! We try and inculcate a sense of fairness and honesty in our children, and for what? Only to have it damaged by adults; great! Give your daughter hugs from us, and some for you too.

I think it's wonderful you are pursuing this. It is a good lesson for your daughter. I hope she is being included in it, too, so she can how you are doing it, and what it takes, etc.
