I saw the movie Pollock....
Ed Harris did a good job, but I felt the script lacked a bit in getting in to why Pollock was the way he was. Anyone have more insight on Jackson Pollock?

The way the movie presented him is the way most people see people who suffer from barely managed mental illness -- somewhat on the surface and not knowing how to respond.

3. That's what I thought too
It didn't even seem to try though. I mean, even knowing the mental illness he is suspected of having would have been nice.

4. Because we like/need explanations? I think we do.
But when it's happening, you don't have one. You mostly just try to surf, with little understanding of your own, let alone anyone else's.

I don't know what was up with him but imho, the movie captured pretty well what it was like to be constantly surprised by a condition out of control. To try to deal with it as if with a blindfold on. And to be, in the end, beaten by it.

Naming things doesn't always result in controlling them, right?

I'm not saying that's what must happen but it happens far too often. Much, much too often.

6. Oh, I know
I am mentally ill. Maybe that's why I'm interested in knowing. But the movie didn't show his symptoms beyond being a drunken jerk. I mean, was he suffering from anxiety? Or was it depression? you know?

7. I did a quick search but came up empty.

The movie seemed to say that he was dealing with some kind of psychosis because of the way he experienced things so differently than people around him. At that point, drinking is self medicating and yes, it comes off as being a jerk but was more likely a survival measure, not a great one, but something. :(
