Who are you playing against the Persians? I have done my best campaigns as the Romans, based on conquering by cultural influence. Still learning the ropes of military conquest.

On edit: I didn't know about this new variation. I was talking only about the regular version. Oops.

4. Well, this is a scenario - Macedonia

It's actually "The Rise of Rome," but I got stuck with Macedonia, which means conquering half of Asia.

And the Mongols are back with this expansion, so we can go back to cursing their foul names...although, in the first regular game I played with the expansion, I totally destroyed them with the Chinese - irony?

2. Don't have the expansion, but I have civ3

Is the expansion that good? Civ3 is the last video game I'd played, and it was fun as hell! France is just a kickass civ in that game.

It includes the Play the World expansion as well, so now you have 31 different tribes to pick from, plus some new tech, buildings, units, and so forth.
