4. KDHX
Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 02:13 PM by tonkatoy57
Community radio station KDHX in St. Louis, MO can be reached at www.kdhx.org

They play all types of music, and I really mean all types. Plus, they carry Democracy Now. It's truly a labor of love. All of the DJ's are volunteers and select the music and plan their own shows.

Take a look at the Saturday lineup.

8:00AM Backroads with Stacy
10:00AM Down Yonder with Keith Dudding (Bluegrass)
12:00PM Mid-Day Jamboree with Fred Gumaer (classic 40's-60's country)
2:00PM Alma Latina with Lydia and Carlos
4:00PM Music from the Hills with John and Gitry (East European Folk)
6:00PM Coin-Operated Radio with Nico and Ryan (Weirdness)
8:00PM Positive Vibrations with Erica Lewis and Michael Kuelker
10:00PM The Grateful Dead Hour / Deader than Ever with Jim Bruce

16. Yeah, it's pretty awesome
Also, the morning show (6-9 AM PT) is not a "show" so to speak. I just thought I'd mention that since 99% of morning radio programs are lame hackneyed DJs (usually three, with weird names) with sound effects and fart jokes, and "Alternative Mornings" is mostly music. Actually, I think it's about 85% music and 15% talk (most morning shows are the other way around), and there's only one DJ and his name's Greg Glover, which is about as normal a name as you can get. I've met him; he's very nice. (He also hosts The Bottom Forty that I mentioned before.) He rarely talks in the mornings and when he does he talks about music (usually front- or backselling songs) and interviews bands and artists ("When the Artist Speaks"). Actually, the only humor comes in the form of the Jon Stewart Minute twice an hour. Although Greg does have a pretty dry sense of humor.

I don't usually get up early enough to listen to the morning show, but the few times I have listened, I've really liked it.

17. AAK--this is hard!
The Rajun' Cajun - KLRZ 100.3 FM & KLEB AM 16002 - http://www.klrzfm.com/
Great zydeco and cajun music--a station the way radio USED to be. Absolutely THE BEST to listen to on a Friday afternoon before the weekend.

WQXR, the Classical Radio Station of the NY Times - www.wqxr.com
Mostly because a good friend of mine from grad school is the weekday evening DJ

Chante France - http://chantefrance.com/
French pop music

Rock Detente - http://rockdetente.com
French pop music from Canada

Whole Wheat Radio - www.wholewheatradio.org/
From Alaska, lots of independent artists

Ridge Radio, Oakville, Ontario, Canada - http://www.ridgeradio.com/
I don't know how I discovered this station--a microstation that plays top hits and easy listening, very good for a station this size, very listenable.

Canuckteach Crooners, Ontario - http://www.live365.com/stations/funkyville_croon
Swing, jazz, singers, and big band. This used to be a free station and is now subscription only, but it's definitely worth the bucks if you like this kind of music.

I'll stop here--sorry for the overkill. :)

These guys have some great streams.

My personal favorite of theirs is "Secret Agent 128k", which is all spy music.

They also have "Illinois Street Lounge" (lounge and bachelor pad music), "Boot Liquor" (alternative country), and streams dedicated to dance, ambient and indie rock. These guys have good taste!

For terrestrial stations, Indie 103.1 in L.A. is good:

I listen to the Egg quite a bit. I talk to the guy who runs it and right now it's under alot of repairs. It used to be fantastic but he wasn't getting enough money to run the station and had to shut it down for some time. Now it's back.

http://www.eggradio.com/bbs/ (eclectic mix of music-everything from new wave to classic rock to alternative to zydeco to showtunes and comedy skits. Oh, and there's an 800 line for requests.)

Join the boards and feel free to post-most are very liberal minded and most work as dj's IRL. They also tend to be quite welcoming and they do have meet-ups for the listeners. Also be sure to rate the music-if it's really hated it won't be played again.

69. gmoney posted this yesterday about a fabulous station, radiohidebound
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x6733913

It plays amazing alternative/college/non-hit songs of the 80s and those in the spirit of the 80s. Great stuff:
