Fuck you Harry Potter.
And fuck all the hype too. Why don't people ever line up to do something of lasting value? Why is it always all about being entertained?

1. You're entitled to your opinion
but shouldn't your "fuck you" be directed at J.K. Rowling?

4. The irony I love here...
Is that ranting about Harry Potter on DU has no lasting value. So when people do so, it IS all about being entertained for the rest of us. :D

6. You want lasting value in your books? Go read some H.P. Lovecraft.
Although the lasting value you get will probably be in the form of nightmares...

7. I have them all. They are mostly shitty with weak endings.
Lovecraft was a hack, he has cult status not so much for his actual work but on his persona & the perceived collectibility of his original works that appeared in rare pulp magazines and amateur journals. In otherwords, his legend was promoted by collectors & dealers of old comic books.

8. "Why is it always all about being entertained?"
Because most people would kill themselves it they had nothing to do but listen to their internal monologue all day...

17. i know, right?
all that pesky meditation upon the condition of one's soul and their place in the universe coupled with existential crisis and a quest for true meaning sure does get in the way of reflexive consumption and walking around asleep for most of one's life.

who has time for that?

me, i'm stoked for the new season of hogan knows best.

kinda reminds me of that old fedex commercial with the french shipping guy sitting at a cafe on the left bank reading a book entitled "existentialisme" with a scooter laden with packages (that he SHOULD be delivering) saying, "i am so bored" in a maurice chevalier mockery of a french accent.

11. Most things of lasting value aren't new. Some say that it takes at least 50 years...
before a book has properly aged. Of course books that were aged were released long ago, so there is no reason people should line up. It can easily obtained at a store or library any time.

13. Nothing has lasting value.
vanitas vanitatum dixit Ecclesiastes vanitas vanitatum omnia vanitas

:wtf:

C.S. Lewis wrote a book about some English kids who walked into a piece of furniture and found a world filled with centaurs, fauns, an icy witch-queen, and a messianic lion. Somehow it stood the test of time.

And yes, I know that the Chronicles of Narnia are Christian allegories. I've read plenty of Lewis' non-fantasy works to know where he's coming from.

Provided of course that society hasn't collapsed and we are left without mass printed books.

but them I wouldn't give you a dime for the books I read when I was twelve either , and I am an avid reader of fairly good literature(and some junk)

I just hope a FEW of the HP fans continue to grow and read !

26. How nice and condescending of you..
I spend all week working hard in a meaninful job that has lasting value but I like to be able to relax and escape the harsh realities of life. People need to be able to relax and unwind. Some of us do it by reading (and not just Harry Potter). Are you so pure and perfect that everything you do is "meaningful"? maybe you should try for sainthood then
