The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poem Thread, 7/29/07
"Hilarious Slants On Being Told You Have Prostate Cancer"

Can you empathize with Wile E. Coyote
at the moment when
he freezes in the air,
suddenly aware
he’s chased the bird
beyond the edge of the cliff?

Or can you recall the time you thought
you were getting a surprise party,
but when you stepped into the room
it was really empty?

Or do you recollect the horror film
that showed the stalwart hero,
neck bitten,
seeing now he cannot see
himself within the mirror?

Or maybe you have missed a turn
in slums at 2:00 a.m.
and left your car for some reason,
locking the keys inside,
leaving you to look at that
cozy interior
and then behind you
at that long, dark street.

Or let’s try the circus clown
who comes on in fancy tux,
ruffled shirt and cummerbund,
when another clown,
with one snatch,
jerks the whole affair away,
leaving him standing there
in heart-covered shorts,
clutching his crotch.

—Graal Braun

4. ouch...
or waking up in your bed
in your nice suburban house,
only to be told you are being
divorced and asked to move out...

gut-kick indeed...

5. I was wondering if you (or a couple of other Loungers I can think of) would chime in.

7. Well, I promise to vary the subject matter of the poems a little.

Tomorrow's poem will be about something completely different, I swear.

11. Maybe everyone would just prefer some poems about puppies. Or meerkats.

13. My dear BlueIris...
Please don't take the lack of responses personally, sweetie...

Retro hardly ever had more than 4 or 5 on a regular basis...

A lot of folks just look, and leave no response...

12. Wow. That really hit me, BI.
Not because I have had cancer, but my dad did (he died from it), and my mom did (she is a survivor).

When hearing the news, it's one of those moments that leaves you stunned, caught between grief and disbelief. I remember thinking, if I don't move, it won't be true.

14. Hmmm. I guess I'm just let down because of expectations.
WAAAAAAH. Why don't people love poetry around here? Poetry and the Democratic cause have always been closely connected.

15. Ironically I just finished writing some poetry before I saw this
Very interesting poem. The juxtapositions a humorous, but obviously hide a great amount of pain and fear. I never read this one before, thanks! :)

16. Well, this one is from my vast collection of quality poems written by unknown, non-academic writers
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 04:48 AM by BlueIris
so it's understandable that you've never seen it before. The magazine I pulled this from has long since gone under. I doubt the author has published any books or chapbooks or in many other periodicals. I like obscurity. Especially on Sunday nights.
