10. One of my grocery store friends let me in on a little secret

I take my own reusable bags to the store, also. I get lots of dirty looks and sighs from the checkers. I always look for my one friendly checker who is a big environmentalist, writes loads of LTTEs about progressive issues, etc., because he's always cool about it. He told me the other day that stores record check-out times as one of the performance standards that their pay is based on, and that having to use other people's bags really does slow them down. That's why some of the checkers get a little testy about it.

I decided to write the manager of the store and of other stores in my area to tell them to get with the program and not punish employees for this. I basically said that reusable bags are the way the world is going, and that they need to get on board! We'll see if I get a response.
