Plus, tell us about your town. (If you live in a big city, i.e. New York or Boston, tell us something we don't know.)

Maybe someone can make a map to show how we're all spread out across the country. I don't know how to do that - sorry.

I live in Kentwood, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids. It's a beautiful place with a population nearing 50,000. It's kinda Republican, but I can handle it.

31. I've been to the Canaan Valley area!
After my grandma passed on in 2001, we told a few fasmily friends aboiut it. One of them, who lives in Davis, wanted my parents (she knewe my mom) to go there and visit. I went with them, and together, we all (my parents, grandma's friend, and I) went to see Blackwater Falls in June 2001. WOW! Beautiful, indeed.

5. Waldorf, Maryland
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 07:12 PM by Bertha Venation
Waldorf is in Charles County. We've got Washington, DC, to the north; the Potomac River to the west & south; the Chesapeake Bay to the east. It's about a 35-mile drive to work in DC. On an average day, that trip takes 1.25 to 1.50 hours one way.

But we own a house on more than an acre in a quiet, out-of-the-way, semi-rural place. We have wonderful neighbors and are surrounded by trees, critters, and, most of the time, silence. To us the commute is worth it.

Oops, forgot the politics: while the county elections site shows that Charles County voted for Gore in '00, the area seems far more conservative than that to me, what with the pro-gun, anti-choice, anti-gay, and sometimes ultra-religious bumper stickers on display almost everywhere I go. But I don't care. The conservatives I know are just folks like me.

7. Preston - Melbourne - Victoria - Australia
Preston is a inner suburb of Melbourne - used to be very much a working class area but in the last 5 - 10 years yuppies have been noticing how close it is to the city and have consequently been racheting up the house prices.

Best feature - the ability to eat out a lot even if you're broke - very multicultural area with good cheap restaurants/take-aways, think I'll have Nepalese tonight

6. Castine, Maine ..Very old town
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 07:18 PM by GreenPartyVoter
Predates the USA by 160 or so years.

"Castine, a small coastal village of approximately 7.9 square miles, is located on a peninsula in the East Penobscot Bay Region of Maine, 1 hour from Bangor, and 1.25 hours from Camden and from Bar Harbor. The town, on the National Register of Historic Places, consists of two distinct geographic areas referred to as the Village and "off neck," a narrow strip of land that separates the Bagaduce River on one side from the Penobscot River on the other.

More than 100 historic markers can be found in this town characterized by its 18th century architecture. Major landmarks include Fort George, built by the British in 1779 and partially restored as a state memorial, and Fort Madison, earthwork remnants built by the Americans in 1811, occupied by the British during the War of 1812 and reconstructed during the American Civil War.

The year-round population is roughly 1,300 including 700 college students attending Maine Maritime Academy. With summer residents, and visitors by land and sea, the population at least doubles from Memorial Day to Labor Day."

10. Marysville, Washington
About 30 minutes north of Seattle right off I-5.

Third week of June we have the Strawberry Festival. Try the Adult Tricycle races on that Friday night through downtown. 'Grueling' comes to mind here...never participated myself but they are a blast to watch.

We actually have a burger joint here that serves YAK!!!(I am serious you Lounge Lizards).

We are now also famous for having the longest teacher strike in Washington State. 49 days this past fall. The voters here voted 3 of the long time board members out during that strike at about 63-67% votes cast saying they had to go. I am very pro public education and pro teacher myself.

Come see us. Mr. Jax is a much 'nicer' liberal than I am and he cooks an excellent Dungeness Crab. We would love to see any and all DUers anytime. I promise to play nice...

Jax

11. Saanich, a suburb of Victoria
In British Columbia, Canada. I don't know how to post pictures yet, but it is a very beautiful place at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The weather is moderate, usually one to two weeks of cold (30-40F)in the winter and one to two weeks of hot (75-85F) in the summer. It's raining right now, but the last few days have been gorgeous. I moved here a few years ago and hated it at first because it is so different than Vancouver, but I love it now and don't think I would ever move. Even though there are many many seniors, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Lots of green space, walkways, and riding and biking trails, and many tourist oriented businesses.

14. Freeland, Washington
in Island County. We're surrounded by water and that's the way we like it. It's pretty quiet here during the winter. Island time prevails. Freeland isn't a real town, more like a developers creation with a grocery store and an Ace Hardware. "History" only goes back a hundred-fifty years up here. What history we do have is tends to be pretty much local news. We had a murder here last month. First one in quite a while. Nobody's been arrested. We'll have our caucuses here on february 7th. Then I'll start thinking about planting some peas.

Fun post ih8thegop! What could I possibly tell anyone at DU about SF that they don't already know :7 ! There are so many good things to say.

A big plus is that I can escape into some of the most beautiful rural areas in the world in less than 35 minutes! Western Marin County is postcard perfect, especially this time of year (*everything* is green). Redwood trees are truly a spiritual creation!

There's a great old movie theatre in "my" part of town, - the Castro theatre. It shows classic old films, hosts film festivals, and special events -- it's an unforgettable experience.

Oh yes, one more thing...the ocean is *cold* here. We don't play volleyball at the beach or surf without a wet-suit. Did you know that occasionally we have shark sightings (that would be the "Great White" variety!) :scared: :hi:
