The Day the Earth Stood Still - Keanu Reeves To Star In Remake
Keanu Reeves To Star In Remake Of The Day the Earth Stood Still

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/day_the_earth_stood_still/news/1666443/1.php?c_page=all

Time to set the "Days Without a Remake Announcement" counter back to zero, folks -- and this time around, Keanu Reeves is getting in on the action: Variety reports that Reeves has signed on to star in a new-and-presumably-improved version of the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still.

The original Day, one of many films providing allegorical warnings during the dawn of the military-industrial complex, told the tale of a humanoid alien named Klaatu who journeys to Earth with a giant robot named Gort in an effort to convince the human race to change its warlike ways. (Ironically, Klaatu's efforts are underscored with the threat of violence from our interstellar neighbors, but hey, nobody's perfect.)

We know what you're thinking -- that Reeves would be perfect for the role of Gort -- but he has actually agreed to play Klaatu. No other casting announcements have been made, but Scott Derrickson will direct, with David Scarpa handling the screenplay. Twentieth Century Fox is hoping to start production late this year or in early 2008.

9. How original.
Hollywood keeps doing the old movies over and over which end up being lousy and cheap. The original was perfect.

I used to wonder if maybe a sequal could be made with Patricia O'Neil having a baby. Remember Klatuu and she were together in that ship alone and when he came out he was in his space traveling outfit and they gave each other a faint secret smile.

See, isn't my idea way better than rehasing the orignal all over again. Hollywood here I come !!!!!

19. I'm not a big fan of Keanu, but...
Complaints about HOllywood's lack of originality are a little off the mark in this case, since the 1951 film was of course based on Harry Bates' short story Farewell to the Master.

It would be equally valid IMO to complain about the 1951 film's lack of originality.

But at least that film did a better job on casting...

24. Huh?
Thought what was great? The 1951 film?

Me, too--it's widely regarded a canonical classic of the genre. But if we're talking about originality in film, then a film adapted from an existing work (as the 1951 was adapted) must be recognized to lack a certain originality even as a remake of the film (or the original underlying work) would lack originality.

Doesn't mean that the 1951 film wasn't great, but it wasn't entirely original, either.

11. The director's resume is not exactly impressive
Urban Legends: The Final Cut???
Hellraiser: Inferno???

OK, the Exorcism of Emily Rose was supposedly mediocre at least.

Deathwish. The Brave One is nothing more than a gender reversed version of the old Charles Bronson film.
