I remember thinking that it was a joke - it couldn't be serious.

There was another one featuring Jane Curtin doing her 'Weekend Update' character from Saturday Night Live.

7. Oh hell yeah. My friends and I called ourselves
the Coffee Underachievers.

I remember reading in the papers at the time that the coffee industry was worried that the new generation wouldn't take up the habit. Then came Starbucks and the coffeehouse boom a couple years later, which neatly solved that problem.

8. Hmmm, look at some stuff I found...
I swear to christ I remember Jane Curtin doing one of those commercials, so I googled with no avail and came upon this movie http://www.blackgoldmovie.com/ about the coffee industry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeK2QqjSB1I

hmmmmm. Sounds interesting....

Then I started thinking about the other commercials I remember from the 1980's.

"Beef, It's What's for Dinner" and "Pork, the other white meat" from the factory farming business.

Makes you wonder doesn't it. :-(

with Robert Young where he said "Why so tense Jim" and Jim replied "My doctor told me to switch to decaf" and poor Jim was jonesing something awful for a hit.

12. We used to drink Taster's Choice when we were in college... and we liked it!
:puke:

Speaking of Taster's Choice, they had some pretty cheesy commercials back then too.

Say, remember this woman?

11. Yes I do!
I think about it occasionally. Funny thing was, I hated coffee back then, and now I can barely exist without it.

18. I remember the Coffee Acheivers ads...
It must have been the first ad they ran that stated (paraphrasing)

"Coffee gives you the serenity to dream it, and the vitality to do it."

It was pretty quickly changed to:

"Coffee gives you the serenity to dream it... then you can DO IT!"

Maybe someone thought they were promoting it as a way to get wired!

Bizarre commercials.

23. I do remember the ads, and I recall reading that they were made because
coffee marketers were worried that young people were getting their caffeine fixes from soft drinks instead of from coffee. If trends at that time had continued, coffee would have been strictly a middle-aged drink by now.

The marketers needn't have worried.
