Any Gay,Lesbian,Transgendered Young Folks Needing Parent Figure to Talk to?
Hi, I'm a 55 year old mom of a 28 year old Lesbian daughter. Her Dad and I have been supportive since she came out to us. We've heard too many sad stories about her friends whose parents are unable or unwilling to give their children acceptance at this time. If you'd like to share in this format, feel free to write. I'm sure other adults who are understanding will join this thread and hopefully we can help you guys deal with some of your feelings. Would also love to hear positive stories and shares from other parents. This is not in lieu of professional help but it could be a safe place that's helpful.

1. There is PFLAG.
Parents and friends of Lesbians and gays. They are also friends of bi and trans people.

I am a 59-year-old mom of a 28-year-old Lesbian daughter. My husband and I have also been supportive since she came out to us at age 19. (I had sort of figured it out before that).

There are too many sad stories. There are too many suicides and too many homeless gay teenagers and young people. Kids should never come out to their families until they have a way to support themselves. Too many parents kick them out. I can't imagine doing such a thing.

DU is supportive of the GLBT community. But I do find myself in constant need of education by my GLBT friends. Even after all this time, I have things to learn.

It's not a choice and it's not a lifestyle. The only homosexual agenda is: give us the same rights as everyone else.

2. My personal story...
My parents found out I was gay when I was 13 (two years ago), and they took it hard initially. Pretty much because they found out by accident - I had a profile on the internet that said it, and they found that. My mom took it especially hard, and spent about six months trying to convince me that it was a phase, that I wasn't really queer, I was just reacting to being bullied when I was younger. (I know...WTF?) Then she accepted that I was actually gay, but went through this whole thing where I apparently wasn't supposed to tell anyone because apparently they'd all hate me. Which is also weird, because I live in Toronto, quite possibly the gayest city in the world.

It's gotten a lot better. My mom still doesn't understand a lot of it, but she accepts it. My dad warmed up to it fairly quickly...I guess he already kind of knew.
