1. I couldn't watch it

She is so talented really. I've heard her sing amazingly. It's a shame what she is doing to herself.

2. This Amy Winehouse thing...
Is just something that has totally passed over my head. I never heard about her before, and all of a sudden people are talking about her and how she is a wasted trainwreck. And I still don't know anything about her, other than that she is a wasted trainwreck.

9. Look up "Teach Me Tonight". That's a good example of her
pre-beehive talent. She's actually quite good, with much more emotion and nuance than most singers.

29. Years ago, I hung out at jazz clubs a lot, and...
I can't tell you how many times I saw some of even the big names almost fall off the atage or just stare at their instruments, usually to great applause.

I remember once timing a trumpeter who played for a solid three minute without a sound coming out.

(Rock stars didn't invent this dope thing by themselves, you know.)

12. Here's her voice, bare and naked. Eyeliner and posturing aside,
the raw talent is clearly there.

I don't know what's up with her personal life...but she is a talented person.

Here's "Valerie":

31. That was a treat, thank you.
Such a tiny package containing such astonishing talent. I really enjoy her voice, so smokey and twisted. The planet must surely join in wishing she can straighten herself out.
Great link, TY again.

32. This is really quite interesting...
we have two singers: Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse. The latter has talent while the former doesn't. The not so talented has substance abuse problems and we ridicule her, the talented one has substance abuse problems and we wish her well.

Talented or not, they are both people with substance abuse problems... why are we showing sympathy for only one of them?

No, actually I've read so many rather cruel posts about Britney's drug addiction - they are so different than what I'm reading in this thread.

38. I wish Britney health et happiness also. I have never posted ill against anyone w/ abuse problems.
(unless it's someone in the * whitehouse) The Anna Nicole Smith threads ~ I never posted on. Those threads horrified me.

There by the Grace of God, go I.

be careful about. Amy's basically single.

They both need help.

43. I hope Britney gets straightened out
but it goes beyond that.

Amy Winehouse is a wreck because she has substance abuse problems.

Britney has substance abuse problems because she is a wreck.

That is my perception.

41. It's a return to old school style
I think most of Winehouse's fans are either Boomers or GenX - people who would have been exposed to Shirley Bassey and Ella Fitzgerald.

She's talented.

Compare what you posted to a (more) sober performance.

Unless a song is about lyrics, words are overrated.

Listen to this. She never says one word. Well, she may say I.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbL9vr4Q2LU

EDIT: She used words toward end.. I lied.

23. hehe- compare? hmm..
nope. I was just saying sometimes words are just a waste. Like if she sang N-Sync lyrics would it make a difference in how she sounds.

The girl is just wasted out of her head. Thank goodness for uppers or she'd have fallen off the stage in a drunken, drugged crash.

:)

18. This "trainwreck" is bilingual, obviously...
...Yet I myself can only speak English (at times barely). In an age when American intelligence forces need more Arabic-speakers, I find it hard to believe that so many of you are mocking a lady who is clearly (okay, maybe not so clearly) a translator of cryptic missives from THOSE WHO WOULD DESTROY US.

On the other hand, she does make Janis Joplin on smack sound like Queen Elizabeth II.

Never been that route, but everything else on the planet I've snorted, injected, or otherwise ingested. It's like looking in the mirror when watching her.

...about the mirror. There may be subtle differences, but yeah, you can see yourself by looking at Amy, and I'm sure I could see myself in you and vice-versa. I'd rather see you, and have you see me, at our best. Or at least better, yeah?
