Tech Question on Memory Expansion

So, I've decided I need to expand my PC's memory, but I'm a little confused on one aspect of it.

I have a Sony that takes PC3200 (400MHz) memory. There are 4 slots which are currently occupied by 2x256MB memory cards.

I was planning on replacing these with 2x512MB sticks; however, I'm finding 1GB sticks comparably priced to the 512's. So, I decided to just get two of those and be done with it.

However, I then noticed a note on the computer that says that the maximum amount of memory the PC will take is 2GB. Does this indicate that a 1GB memory stick will not fit/work in my available slots?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. It means the maximum memory is 2GB ...

which means that 2 1GB memory sticks are the maximum your machine can handle; or 4 512MB sticks.

2. 2 GB maximum TOTAL memory....

2 1GB modules should be fine.

At least you didn't fall into the RDRAM trap like I did.... :(
