I'm going to volunteer
I just called up the suicide prevention hotline and asked them about volunteering for one of their crisis line positions. I told them that I am available on the weekends and they said they had a need to fill those shift spots.

I still have to jump through a couple of hoops. There is an application that I have to fill out and I have to go through a lot of training if that's approved. But they really need people so I think I'm in there.

You all may know about my experiences with mental illness. When I was in the hospital the last time (4.5 years ago), I was really impressed with the doctors, nurses, therapists, and even the orderlies. I was so grateful for those people. When I got out of the hospital I vowed to do something to give back to the mental health community. I tried going back to college to learn psychology, but it turned out that I just was not college material.

This is my way of saying thank you to all of those who help people like me. I am going to be one of them now.

1. how wonderful!
I think you'll make an excellent crisis counselor. You've always seemed so level-headed and give such good advice on here. Your past experiences can help you help others.

It's a really good thing you're doing, Droopy.

2. Thank you, mzteris
A lot of times on the weekend I sit here with absolutely nothing to do. I thought about other types of volunteer work, but this seems to be the most essential type of work you can do. Trying to preserve life. I'm hoping it will be very rewarding.

3. Good for you.
When I was in college, I was a volunteer at our local Alcohol/Drug 24-Hour Helpline. Did that for 3 years. It was a good experience.
