1. It must be art
because I don't see a way that it could be useful in developing open land into condos.

3. Likewise, this is art
because it cannot be used to conquer other nations.

You cannot use these to sell products. Hence it is art.

2. The "art"
involved in this piece, is getting someone to actually believe it's worth spending money to have.

:hi:

I find it quite captivating - beautiful lines, sensuous curves, texture and color.

Wonderful!!

11. Yes, I am - a semi professional artist, and appreciator of art, esp. modern stuff.
A few DUers even own paintings of mine.

13. My rule of thumb: just because I don't like or don't understand it doesn't mean it
isn't art. However, if the only title the author could come up with is 'Untitled', that means that they didn't know what the fuck it is, either. Ergo, not art...

14. Ok you bunch of Philistines, name the most famous American artists

from 1955 to the Present.

If you can't come up with at least five you
know shit from shinola about art.

16. Warhol, Basquiat, Van Vliet, Weyeth, Pollock
off the top of my head. You may not like my initial choices at all.

At least as far as painting goes. Van Vliet also did remarkable music.

17. Good work but the list of great modern American artists is much longer

let's see how the rest of the kiddies do.

15. It's art because somebody in Lambertville...
bought it to add to a collection, which is now being sold as an art collection now that the owner is dead.

After having had some dealings with a few galleries in years past, and having known some actual artists who made a living selling stuff, "art" is simply defined as anything a gallery owner can make a buck off of.

The gallery sells a few of your pieces to a known tastemaker, and ZAP! you're now officially an artist and your work sells for thousands. Piss off said owner and you will find your new works "derivative" and not worth what your old "good" stuff is.

Amazingly, sometimes stuff of real worth is actually sold as "art" this way. Something about cream rising.
