Geez, I LOVE Carlos Santana.......

SNIP>>>

We know that a two-hour or three-hour concert is going to feel like fifteen seconds, because the first thing that happens when something spiritual assaults the place, time disappears. Gravity disappears. Issues disappear.
-Carlos Santana
SNIP>>>>>

Do you think that music has the power to really change the world, to reach beyond the people who are passionate about music? Can music change the world?

Carlos Santana
Yes. I will bet you anything that if you put selective music by spiritual musicians on elevators and shopping malls there would be less Columbines, there would be less postals, less rape, less crime. When you're stuck in an elevator and you're ready to go postal and you hear "A Love Supreme" or "One Love" or "What's Going On" or "Blowing in the Wind" or "Imagine" you can't fucking do anything stupid anymore.

You're right.

It won't permit you, man. Your molecules obey the sound of divinity. If you just compile a CD "What's Going On," "Imagine," "One Love," "A Change is Gonna Come," Sam Cook, you know, and you play it in shopping malls continuously I bet you anywhere in the world people would stop fighting and stop stealing and stop raping, because molecules obey the sound of divinity. That's just the way it is. Just like, excuse the expression, when you're 17-years-old and you see something beautiful and you get excited, all the blood rushes to your penis. I'm talking about physical molecules. I'm not talking about the sex or the squirming, the giggling, stupid stuff. I'm talking about the order . There's a sense of order in this planet. If we would consciously go to Seattle, where they program the Muzaks of all the elevators and hotels in the cities, and say, "We want you to try this just for 24 hours. Just play this kind of music, these 27 songs," you would see an incredible difference in human being behavior.

1. Me too!
I saw him in concert only once, right after Supernatural was released, and he was great. I am a youngin', so I don't remember a lot of his earlier stuff, but he still put on quite the show.

2. I have seen him over 100 times......
And he is always incredible. I have seen him jam with the Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, Miles Davis, Trey Anastasio and many others.

he played the US festival with Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea at 10 AM! he played in the USSR at the first rock and roll show ever in the Soviet Union and I still feel that had as much to do with the demise of the USSR as Reagan ever did.

He is one of those guys that it so much more than just a rock show, it is life and death, happiness and sadness, beauty and joy all in one night.

28. Embarrassed to say I've NEVER seen him;
always seemed to have a gig, or no gig but no money; and he comes to Albuquerque/Santa Fe at least every couple of years. Maybe I'll finally get to see him next time, before its too late. And I've learned the lesson that sometimes it is too late...I remember in'70 saying I GOTTA see Hendrix one of these days... and while living in Chicago in part of '75 into '76; making a New Year's resolution to see Hound Dog Taylor and Howlin Wolf "next year". Hound Dog died Jan. 10 and Wolf died on the 20th...At least I finally got to see Strummer a couple of years before he left us. Benny, my fellow E Street fan, I'm gonna try to remember the last sentence of your post the next time Carlos comes here; hopefully on a week night and I'll be able to go.

29. Cool, you will be transported.....
even though he is kind of not like he used to be and plays the same songs all the time now, it is still something pretty special...

BTW< did I give you my Bruce review? Saw both shows in Oakland and ..pretty cool. Maybe I have moved past the arena rock thing. The show was pretty short really, only about 2 hours, no set break. No big rock jams. Changed 4 songs from the pervious night, same encores. No stories, no preachiness.

Still it was great to see them rocking. the new songs are really good. I just wish he would cover his catalog instead of playing the same thing all the time. If the jam bands can do it so can he doncha think? (Same goes for Santana).

I think of it as one of the seminal moments in pop music history. Younger DUers, these are your grandparents :)

9. I love the blonde girl with glasses.....
All of a sudden it just comes over her.......

A great story about this performance at Woodstock is in Bill Graham's book. He demanded that they play later in the day even though they were completely unknown at the time. he also insisted that they get paid.....up front.... making them the only band that did get paid at the time. he also did not sign a release letting the promoters use their performance for free like every other band did.

So Santana was the only artist that actually got paid to play at Woodstock.

12. No shit! I have a hard time remembering life before the internet!
And can you believe, they only got $1500! I know that in 1969 dollars, that's probably more like $5000 today.. but still! The biggest show of the decade, and only $1500.. but then, they got to play infront of a couple hundred thousand people so, it balances out I guess

15. $1500 in 1969= $8305.50 in 2007
453.7= CPI % increase since then.
But this is an oversimplification.. The average monthly wage then was about 2000 dollars.

Gas was .45 a gallon. That's 3,333.3 gallons
That would cost 11.000 dollars today

A 3/2 home in Southern Cal was 25,000. $ 1500 was the equivalent of about 4months average house payments.

Take any of those number and I think you can extrapolate that 1500 bucks then is comparative to around 14,000 bucks. I don't know if they made a profit after tour logistics but the exposure and future album sales was priceless.

24. I always thought the McLaughlin-era stuff was his best.
"Love, Devotion, Surrender" is on my list as well, along with "Welcome" and "Lotus." I also consider "Moonflower" to be a must-have...it's a great overall album that balances the pop / mainstream sensibilities with the more adventurous jamming stuff, but it's also the home of the definitive "Europa." One of his many contemplative instrumental gems, "Full Moon," makes that album "Spirits Dancing In The Flesh" worth checking out. "Swing of Delight" was another great instrumental offering.

I like much of what he's done throughout his career, but as you can see from the above list, I'm most drawn to the albums in which he straps it on, turns it up, and goes effing NUTS...things like the 11-minute battle with McLaughlin, "Flame Sky," on "Welcome."

The first side of the album, to me, is his best work. You can hear the desert, feel the heat.....Borboletta is another huge fave for me....
