I'm heading out to go see The Waterboys play in Portland...
:hi:

I wish I was a fisherman
tumblin' on the seas
far away from dry land
and its bitter memories
castin' out my sweet line
with abandonment and love
no ceiling bearin' down on me
save the starry sky above
with light in my head
with you in my arms...

4. It was great, thanks!
We got right up front, about ten feet from Mike.

They can really rock out as well as do their more traditional music thing ... or a combo thereof.

This is a video taken just a few days ago, to give you an idea:

The fiddler (Steve) wore the same jacket last night. :)

On edit, it was at the Aladdin Theater on SE Milwaukie. Great venue! Very intimate. We were right up near the stage...

6. OMG I was just thinking about them!
Saw them in Boston years and years and years ago. GREAT show! Thought about them last week as I heard Loreena McKennitt's version of "The Stolen Child" and realized I like the WB's version better.

8. They were really great. I'd never seen them live before.
I didn't expect them to rock out so much. It was a really incredible show. Mike Scott got in a dig at Bush & Dick, and he said a few things about the situation in Burma and how his heroes were people like Aung Sung Suki and Simon Wiesenthal... :hi:

10. The Orpheum?
Back in 1989? The "raggle taggle" incarnation of the band, with Sharon Shannon?

Great show!

16. Different place
Sounds like you might be describing the Berklee Performance Center, near Symphony Hall, corner of Mass Ave and Newbury St.

The Orpheum is on Tremont St., almost directly across from the Park St. subway entrance.

17. Hmmm...nope, not that
It was a small club on Mass Ave, I'm pretty certain. Dang, I've been away from that city for too long.

13. Wonderful!
They had the whole place up and dancing. They are such great musicians, and Mike Scott is a kick. Amazing energy. The fiddle player is fabulous; he can get such a variety of sounds out of that instrument.

They played a range of music, everything from "Whole of the Moon" to "Killing My Heart" to "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" to a cover of Springsteen's "Independence Day" and of course "Fisherman's Blues," many others ... It was almost a 2 1/2 hour show!

You and I have very similar musical tastes, I think ... :toast:

2 1/2 hours?! I could have died happy after that.
Story for you:
My ex (from Dublin) was w/ some friends and had car trouble in the middle of nowhere one night (County Cork, I think) and an old man stopped to help. So, the old man gives them a lift to town and mentions he's on his way to see his son play. "He's in a band called The Waterboys. Ever heard of 'em?" So, they tagged along with the old man and had a great time.
