2. Mine:
Best: "Breakfast at Tiffany's". It is NOT the same ending as in the book, but it was a nice, happy ending.

Worst: "Fail Safe". You have to admit, our own fighter bombers dropping an atomic bomb on New York City isn't exactly a great ending.

5. Best and worst ending in the same Movie
COOL HAND LUKE:

- Luke was shot and killed by the cops; thats the worst. He was finally free of the penal institution; that's the best. It all happened in just a few seconds. Still one of the greatest movies of all time.

I think it's the worst because the rest of the movie was actually really good, and the ending just ruined it.

Best: that's a toughie. I'll have to think about it.

21. Best: Thelma & Louise -- Worst: Red River (John Wayne)

Best: Thelma & Louise -- all these years later the ending still amazes.

Worst: A few months ago, I caught the western Red River for the first time on television.

Incredible story, action and photography! -- then along came the ending -- an amazing letdown/sellout of the story -- and the device used -- a frustrated monologue by the love interest in the film (unfortunately, probably the worst acting Joanne Dru ever did -- but then again, no actress could master those Howard Hawks-speeding-bullet rants except for Rosalind Russell)-- well, in my book, one of the worst endings ever in a film.

81. I think you've hit the nail on the head.
The Usual Suspects was brilliant, period. I saw it twice in the theaters, and second time some yahoo was thinking out loud and gradually putting the pieces together at the end, and nearly announced it all to the audience. It took a lot of willpower not to tackle him and clap a hand over his mouth.

By the way, the novel Love Story had a better ending than the movie. I have no idea why they felt the need to change it.

And watch his/her face as the comprehension suddenly hits at the end. "Holy Shit!" seems to be the consensus.

Depriving someone of that is a sin. Those people should be taken out and shot at dawn, along with all those who ruined "The Empire Strikes Back", "The Crying Game" and "The Sixth Sense" for me.

(edited to add)
And the end of "Citizen Kane" to has to be one of the Greatest.

(Spoiler: "Rosebud" is really Luke Skywalker's father)

71. Best: right now, I'm thinking Brazil. It's harsh and unforgiving...
just like real life. The fantasy and wonder gives way to total soul-crushing despair in a matter of seconds. And Michael Palin in a baby mask... :scared:

Worst? Let me think...Manos: The Hands of Fate. An exceptionally retarded ending to an exceptionally retarded movie.
Ah, but if you're thinking a bad ending to a GOOD movie?
An American Werewolf in London...great movie, but the ending blows.

74. One of the best: The Empire Strikes Back
Come on, "Luke, I am your father" is a great WTF moment.

I just saw the "Robot Chicken" take-off on this:

Vader: Luke, I am your father.

Luke: NOOOOO!!!!

Vader: Leia is your sister.

Luke: NO!

Vader: Join me (etc etc)

Luke: No.

becomes. . .

Vader: And as a child, I build R2D2.

Luke: Look, if you're not gonna be serious, I'm outta here. (Leaves)

79. Worst
Return of the Jedi. One would think after all of that there would have been something better than just a party with the Ewoks.

Best: Loved the Nazis getting fried in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

82. Best: The Usual Suspects
That one blew me away! Another movie with a 'best' ending that also blew me away was "No Way Out" (with Kevin Costner).

90. Best-12 Monkeys
After all the confusion, after Bruce Willis gets killed as an adult in front of his child self, the terrorist with the virus gets on the plane and the woman from the future sits next to him, and they briefly converse about what a terrible place the world is. He asks her what line of work she is in, and she responds "Insurance". The rest is left to your imagination.

91. Speaking As A Fifth-Generation Texan....
...the final line of the movie "Lone Star" really resonates with me: "Forget the Alamo." Maybe it's just a liberal Texan thing.....

92. Best: "Memento" and "Kill Bill"
Memento: It really brought the whole movie together and you *finally* understood what was going on.

Kill Bill: Come on, you all knew how it would end! It was nice to see it.
